Since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has now experienced the most intense drone attacks attributed to Ukraine.
The Russian military reported that overnight, 556 drones were shot down across 14 regions nationwide.
Officials confirmed that at least three people have died in the Moscow area.
Regional Governor Andrei Vorobiev reported that one woman died in Khimki, north of the capital.
In the village of Pogorelki, a man and a woman lost their lives during the drone assault.
Governor Vorobiev stated that three men and one woman were injured in the attacks, and numerous homes sustained damage.
Targeting Oil Refinery Facilities
Among the targeted locations is a major oil refinery facility located in the capital city.
Sergei Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, reported that twelve people were injured during the attack on this facility.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that eight people were wounded due to the Russian drone attack in Ukraine.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned of a severe response to Russia.
Zelensky had pledged a strong reaction following a Russian drone barrage that killed 24 people with approximately 1,500 drones launched.
“From 3 a.m., air defense units have been neutralizing a large number of drones,” Governor Vorobiev wrote on Telegram Sunday morning.
Vorobiev also reported a fire at a private home in the southwestern village of Subotino in Moscow.
Ukraine has not issued an immediate response concerning the recent drone strike in the Moscow region.
Capture of the Fifth Sector
Zelensky revealed on Saturday that Ukrainian forces have destroyed significant Russian military assets including an aircraft, a helicopter, and a cargo ship.
“Our long-range strikes have targeted Russian oil facilities and ships,” Zelensky said while referencing the drone attack, “Most of our operations are still ongoing.”
In recent months, the Ukrainian military has intensified assaults on key Russian energy centers.
Kyiv has declared these energy hubs as legitimate targets due to their importance for sustaining war efforts.

According to the latest update from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched 287 drones Saturday night.
While 279 drones were shot down or neutralized, eight managed to hit targets at seven different locations.
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has taken control of nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
