Former Cuban Leader Raúl Castro Charged with Murder in the US

The United States has charged former Cuban leader Raúl Castro with the murder of American citizens and involvement in two plane crashes between Cuba and Florida in 1996. The indictment, made public on Wednesday, alleges that Castro and five others are responsible for the deaths of four people, including three American citizens, in crashes involving planes linked to a Cuban-American group called ‘Brothers.’ At the time of the incidents, the 94-year-old Castro was head of Cuba’s armed forces and faced international criticism over the events.

As the US increases pressure on Cuba’s communist government, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has dismissed the US charges as “political maneuvers without any legal basis.” Speaking at the Freedom Tower in Miami, Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced four separate murder charges against Castro related to the downing of planes and resulting deaths.

“The United States and President Trump do not forget, and should not forget, their citizens,” Blanche stated. These charges will be prosecuted in American courts, and some could carry life sentences. At a time when Cuba is attempting political and economic reforms under its one-party system, the US Justice Department has targeted a senior figure from the communist regime.

Responding to the US State Department’s statements, Cuban President Díaz-Canel accused the US of spreading falsehoods and collectively punishing the Cuban people. He described the charges against former leader Castro as an “attempt to legitimize a military attack against Cuba” and expressed objections to the American allegations, asserting that facts about the plane crashes have been distorted.

US Congress Passes Resolution to Limit Trump’s Military Authority and Prevent War with Iran, Veto Power Still Remains

US Congress has passed a resolution to limit President Trump’s military authority with a narrow 50-47 vote. If this resolution becomes law, the Trump administration would be required to seek Congressional approval before continuing military action against Iran. According to US law, the President can conduct military operations without Congress’s approval for only 60 days. Kathmandu, May 21.

During the vote, four Republican lawmakers sided with the opposing Democratic Party, while three Republican members were absent. The resolution passed with a 50-47 margin, but several additional steps remain before it becomes law. If enacted, the Trump administration would need Congressional authorization to sustain the war against Iran. The final vote on this matter is still pending in the Senate.

It must also receive approval from the House of Representatives, which currently holds a Republican majority. However, President Trump retains the right to veto this resolution. Overriding a veto requires a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the House, which is difficult to achieve under current circumstances. On Tuesday evening, the Senate convened to discuss halting the war with Iran.

The opposition views this vote as a significant victory. They argue that, according to the US Constitution, the authority to declare war or deploy troops lies with the legislative branch, not the President. The resolution was introduced by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia. Speaking during the debate, he stated, “As talks of a ceasefire are ongoing, President Trump must come before Congress and clearly outline his strategy.” Meanwhile, the White House stated that Trump has exercised his authority to act in defense of American security.

‘Dark Energy’: Insights from the Universe’s Largest New Map

A highly powerful instrument equipped with 5,000 fiber-optic sensors has produced an immense map of the universe. This unprecedentedly large map challenges current understandings of our cosmos. Located at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA, the device called the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has captured images of over 47 million galaxies and quasars, as well as more than 20 million stars. This number is six times greater than the total number of galaxies and other cosmic objects counted previously. These images depict objects approximately 11 billion light-years away, meaning DESI has photographed galaxies from the early stages of the universe’s formation. According to astronomer Luz Angela Garcia from ECCI University in Colombia, this era dates back roughly 13.7 billion years.

This map enhances our understanding of galaxy structures and their formation processes while providing new clues about “dark energy,” a major scientific mystery until now. Over five years, DESI has mapped one-third of the sky. Remarkably, the instrument measured more than 100,000 galaxies in a single night. The light emitted by these galaxies enters the device through fiber-optic detectors, allowing measurement of their spectra, which helps calculate the extent of the universe’s expansion. Another significant achievement of DESI is offering a new perspective on dark energy. It is believed that dark energy constitutes 70 percent of the universe and acts as a force driving its expansion.

Until now, dark energy has been regarded as the “cosmological constant,” a concept Albert Einstein incorporated into his general relativity equations. Clare Cameron, in an article published in Scientific American, explains that this concept assumes the universe is expanding steadily. This new discovery reinforces the idea that dark energy is not constant but evolves over time, strengthening the theory of a dynamic, developing dark energy.

Group G Could Deliver Surprising Results at FIFA World Cup 2026

News Summary

Prepared after comprehensive review.

  • FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G comprises Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand.
  • The group is seen as a test of experience, strategy, and mental resilience.
  • Belgium’s coach, Rudy Garcia, is employing an aggressive playing style aiming to secure the title.

June 6, Kathmandu – In FIFA World Cup 2026, Group G consists of Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand. This group is viewed as a test of experience, tactical acumen, and mental strength.

Bringing together teams from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania with distinct styles of play, the competition within this group promises to be particularly engaging.

Although Belgium is the clear favorite, Egypt led by Mohamed Salah, consistently disciplined and tough competitor Iran, and New Zealand making a return to the World Cup after a long break, keep the group open and competitive.

Belgium is expected to hold the top spot, but the fight for second place is predicted to remain intense until the final matches.

Belgium

Over the last decade, Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ raised hopes of winning the World Cup but failed to lift the trophy. As of 2026, Belgium is entering a new transitional phase.

Veteran players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are participating in their final World Cup, while young stars like Jeremy Doku, Loïs Openda, and Charles De Ketelaere infuse new energy into the squad.

Coach Rudy Garcia is shifting smoothly between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations, adopting an aggressive, high-press style. Unlike previous tournaments where Belgium was often seen as an underdog, this time they are striving for a markedly different approach.

Best Result – Third Place (2018), Last Participation – 2022

Egypt

Egypt returns to the World Cup for the fourth time in history and for the first time since 2018. For coach Hossam Hassan, this represents a special journey, as he is the first Egyptian to qualify the team for the World Cup both as a player and a coach.

Egypt demonstrated their strength during qualifiers by remaining undefeated in 10 matches and conceding only two goals. The team’s structure is founded on defensive discipline, utilizing Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush on counterattacks.

If their attack finds rhythm, Egypt could be the group’s biggest upset team.

Best Result – Group Stage (1934, 1990, 2018), Last Participation – 2018

Iran

Iran will be making its fourth consecutive World Cup appearance and is regarded as one of Asia’s most consistent teams. Under coach Amir Ghalenoei, Iran lost only one of 16 qualifying matches, demonstrating remarkable consistency.

Mehdi Taremi is the team’s leading scorer and central figure in attack. However, the absence of Sardar Azmoun puts additional pressure on the offense. Iran’s playing style is entirely result-oriented.

With defensive discipline, a strong midfield, and swift counterattacks as their main strengths, Iran is not easy to defeat even in tough matches despite limited creativity.

Best Result – Group Stage, Last Participation – 2022

New Zealand

The ‘All Whites,’ New Zealand, return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010. Dominating Oceania qualifiers by winning all five games and conceding just one goal, they showed strong form.

Coach Darren Bazeley’s squad relies on physical strength, organization, and the individual talents of captain Chris Wood. Their greatest achievement in World Cup history was remaining undefeated with three draws in 2010.

This time, New Zealand’s strategy will again focus on defensive blocks and direct attacks. While often considered the underdogs, playing without pressure makes them potentially dangerous opponents.

Best Result – Group Stage (1982, 2010), Last Participation – 2010

Hindustan Petroleum Denies Reports of Fuel and Gas Shortages

May 21, Kathmandu – Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), one of India’s major oil companies, has dismissed reports claiming fuel and gas shortages across the country. The company clarified that there are no supply issues at its retail outlets.

Despite reports suggesting that the ongoing crisis in Iran has led to a reduction in oil and gas supplies and that people in various regions are facing gas shortages, HPCL has refuted these claims. On the social media platform X, the company stated, “HPCL wishes to clarify that reports of fuel shortages and supply disruptions are misleading and do not reflect the actual situation.”

Providing additional details, the company explained, “Fuel supply at HPCL retail outlets remains completely normal with uninterrupted operations and regular replenishments.” The message further noted, “The increased customer presence and queues at some locations are primarily due to the seasonal rise in demand during the month of May.” It also added, “Moreover, many customers are preferring HPCL retail outlets because fuel prices at some private outlets are comparatively higher.”

42 US Aircraft and Drones Destroyed in Iran Conflict, Over $4.5 Billion Spent

News Summary

Presented After Review.

  • US forces lost 42 aircraft and drones destroyed or severely damaged during ‘Operation Epic Fury’ against Iran.
  • The US and Israel had planned a coup in Iran, aiming to install former President Ahmadinejad as leader.
  • The US Senate passed a resolution 50-47 limiting President Trump’s military powers, requiring Congressional approval to continue the conflict.

May 21, Kathmandu — During the ongoing ‘Operation Epic Fury’ against Iran, the United States has suffered significant losses in aircraft. According to a report from the US Congress, 42 US military aircraft and drones have been destroyed or seriously damaged in this conflict.

The US Department of Defense has previously reported that over $4.5 billion has already been spent on the war.

Details of Aircraft Damaged

Among the losses are 6 fighter and attack jets, including one F-35, four F-15E Strike Eagles, and one A-10 Thunderbolt II. Early in April, Iran successfully shot down a US F-15E jet.

The greatest number of losses occurred in the drone fleet. A total of 25 drones were destroyed, including 24 MQ-9 Reapers and one MQ-4C Triton. In addition, 11 other aircraft were either completely destroyed or severely damaged.

Coup Plans in Iran
According to a report by The New York Times, the US and Israel’s military actions were not only aimed at weakening Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities but also included plans to orchestrate a coup.

They intended to promote former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the new leader. On the first day of the conflict, Israel conducted an attack near Ahmadinejad’s residence in Tehran, aiming to free him from detention; however, Ahmadinejad managed to escape.

Subsequently, Israel and the US abandoned the coup plan. Ahmadinejad has been under detention for several years due to deteriorating relations with the Iranian military and Supreme Leader.

The coup plan reportedly involved three phases: the first aimed at sustained airstrikes targeting Iran’s top leaders and activating Kurdish militants as part of US strategy.

The second phase intended to create chaos and a war atmosphere in Iran by Israel to convey the message that the Iranian government was losing control. The third phase targeted infrastructure damage, cutting gas and electricity supplies to increase political pressure and eventually install Ahmadinejad as leader.

Meanwhile, the US Senate has passed a resolution with a narrow margin of 50-47 limiting President Trump’s military authority. Four Republican senators joined in voting against Trump. If enacted into law, the resolution will require Trump to obtain Congressional approval to continue the Iran conflict.

In a speech at the US Coast Guard Academy, President Trump claimed that Iran’s navy and air force have been nearly eliminated. He said that the US now only needs to decide whether to complete military action or negotiate a settlement with Iran.

Can the Grant from China Improve the Severe Condition of the Araniko Highway?

The Chinese government has provided a grant of nearly NPR 180 crore to prevent a 200-meter-long landslide area on the Araniko Highway, which suffered severe damage following the devastating 2015 earthquake, according to Nepalese officials.

The Cabinet on Tuesday decided to accept the grant of 79.36 million RMB (over NPR 179 crore) from the Chinese government for the repair and improvement of the Araniko Highway.

The Nepalese government had previously awarded a contract from its own resources during this fiscal year for landslide prevention stretching about 200 meters, but with the Chinese grant now available, it will be replaced by the Chinese side, an official from the Road Department stated.

The 2015 earthquake caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure, severely slowing traffic along the Nepal-China primary trade route at the Tatopani border, displacing more than ten thousand people, with some communities still residing in risky displacement zones, a local representative conveyed.

Last month, China and Nepal signed a grant agreement exceeding NPR 1.2 billion for the second phase expansion of Kathmandu’s Ring Road.

Aston Villa Wins Europa League Football Title

English club Aston Villa ended a 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League football title. Aston Villa convincingly defeated German club Freiburg 3-0 at Besiktas Park in Istanbul. This victory marked the fifth Europa League title for head coach Unai Emery. (May 21, Kathmandu)

Aston Villa had not won any trophy since their 1996 Football League Cup triumph. At the European level, this is their first title in 44 years, having last won the European Cup in 1982. In the first half of the match, Aston Villa strengthened their control by scoring two goals. In the 41st minute, Yuri Tielemans opened the scoring for the team.

During injury time of the first half, Emiliano Buendia scored an impressive goal to double the lead. In the 58th minute of the second half, Morgan Rogers added a third goal, securing Aston Villa’s victory. Throughout the game, Aston Villa maintained constant pressure. Although Amadou Onana’s shot hit the post and Buendia missed another opportunity, the win was never in doubt.

Since taking over as head coach in November 2022, Unai Emery has overseen a remarkable improvement in Aston Villa’s performance. The club’s last major trophy was the 1996 League Cup, making this the first major title they have achieved in nearly three decades.

18-Year-Old Australian Teenager Reaches the Summit of Mount Everest
