Saudi Arabia Warns: Oil Prices Could Exceed $180 Per Barrel if Strait of Hormuz Disruptions Persist

News Summary

Editorial review conducted based on sources.

  • Saudi Arabian officials estimate that if disruptions continue in the Strait of Hormuz until the end of April, oil prices could rise to as much as $180 per barrel.
  • Attacks between Iran and Israel have been impacting energy hubs across the Gulf region, raising concerns that Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu port could also become a target.
  • Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG export facility, damaged in an Iranian attack, may remain closed for an extended period and could possibly not resume operations before 2026.

March 19, Kathmandu – Saudi Arabian officials have assessed that if the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz continues until the end of April, oil prices could reach $180 per barrel.

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported this projection.

Since hostilities began with Iran on February 28, oil prices have experienced significant volatility. On Thursday, Brent crude briefly touched $119 per barrel before decreasing again.

Omar Karim, a foreign policy expert at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh, told Al Jazeera that with ongoing conflict, oil prices could reach at least $150 per barrel.

“If these Red Sea terminals are attacked and any disruption occurs in the Red Sea, I think oil prices could exceed $150 per barrel,” Karim said.

He added, “Currently, this is the only viable route between Europe and Asia.”

Saudi Arabia continuously exports oil via Yanbu port on the Red Sea, which is over 1,000 kilometers away from the Gulf region.

Due to attacks between Iran and Israel affecting energy sources throughout the Gulf, Saudi officials warn that Yanbu port could also become a target.

Impact of the Ras Laffan Damage

Annie-Sophie Corbeau, an expert at the Center on Global Energy Policy in Paris, commented on Qatar’s Ras Laffan, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility, which was struck in an Iranian attack this week. It is currently assessing the required repair time.

“The full extent of the damage is not yet clear,” Corbeau said. She added, “Based on previous incidents at other LNG centers, repairs could take several months.”

She noted, “Previously, the Freeport LNG facility in Texas was closed for eight months following a major event in 2022.”

Earlier in September 2020, Norway’s Snøhvit LNG plant remained closed for one and a half years following a fire.

“In the worst-case scenario, Ras Laffan may not resume operations until 2026. This means LNG supply could stagnate at 2021 levels,” she explained.

She added this would be a five-year setback with significant global repercussions on gas prices and supply.

Lingering Impact of Internal Conflicts, ‘Silence Killing,’ and ‘Sabotage’ on Nepali Congress Defeat

News Summary

Editorial review conducted.

  • Deputy Chair Vishwaprakash Sharma analyzed that Nepali Congress’s defeat was largely due to entering elections burdened by historical irregularities and a lack of cooperation by forces opposing the special general convention.
  • Sharma identified factional disputes within the party, outdated organizational structure, social media algorithms, coalition impacts, and public dissatisfaction as key reasons for Congress’s defeat.
  • He clarified that party president Gagan Thapa did not need to resign and that holding the new leadership accountable for a sweeping victory in a short span would be unjust.

6 Chaitra, Kathmandu – Initial analyses attribute Nepali Congress’s electoral defeat to the party entering the race burdened by longstanding internal issues and facing sabotage from factions opposed to the special general convention.

At the first central committee meeting held after the elections, Deputy Chair Vishwaprakash Sharma presented a preliminary review of the defeat and outlined 27 main reasons behind the party’s underperformance.

Due to the absence of party president Gagan Thapa, who resigned two days earlier, Sharma chaired the meeting. He emphasized the impact of “silence killing” and “sabotage” within the party on the electoral outcome, indicating without naming specific factions that certain internal elements actively worked against Congress candidates.

Sharma accused both leaders who were denied candidacy and those who failed to secure nominations of serious non-cooperation. Among these was former president Sher Bahadur Deuba, who sought candidacy but did not receive a ticket, with some former organizational leaders allegedly facilitating the defeat of their own party’s candidates — a view aligned with analysts supporting the special general convention.

Regarding opposition from other factions, Sharma remarked, “Opposing the special general convention is an individual’s freedom, yet refusing to support candidates under the tree election symbol cannot be justified as opposition to the convention or any other excuse. Offering help to fellow candidates contesting in areas where one previously stood is a basic ethical responsibility.”

Sharma stated some leaders remained silent, thus contributing to “silence killing.” Analysts aligned with the special general convention cited former presidents Deuba, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Prakash Man Singh, and others as responsible for undermining the party’s efforts.

Indicating that disciplinary actions could be taken against those involved in undermining Congress candidates, Sharma said, “Some showed opportunism; others engaged in active sabotage. This has not only affected the party but will also significantly impact their personal political futures. Silence and inactivity raise ethical questions, and disciplinary inquiry is underway.”

He also underlined that the special general convention’s election of new leadership brought a message of renewal that did not reach voters in time. The inability to quickly regain public trust amid long-standing dissatisfaction was another contributing factor.

Sharma identified the outdated organizational structure as a cause of defeat, stating, “We fought the election with an old format that couldn’t handle new challenges. This was also an organizational reason for our loss.”

He noted that without the special general convention energizing the party to participate in the election, the outcome would likely have been even worse, acknowledging that the convention brought fresh blood into the party.

Deputy Chair Sharma believes the party’s defeat was shaped by the burden of past irregularities. He said that the refusal of a single individual to form committees after the special general convention also played a role.

“Candidate registration was completed just five days after the special general convention, and elections were held within fifty days. The new leadership energized the grassroots but failed to convey the message of change to citizens within a short period,” he explained. “Long-term dissatisfaction could not be transformed into trust quickly.”

While Sharma attributed responsibility for the defeat to all factions involved, he disagreed that President Thapa needed to resign. Regarding the resignation issue, he said, “It is unfair to blame the person who stepped in to control the fire at the last moment for not putting out the fire entirely.”

“Chain of systemic distortions as primary cause of defeat”

Sharma highlighted factors such as past governments’ performance, electoral coalitions, political power distribution, the Congress-UML alliance, and social media algorithms as contributing to Congress’s defeat.

He noted that although voters supported the then CPN-UML in 2017 hoping for a stable government, the inability to govern effectively for five years increased public disillusionment.

In 2022, no party secured a majority; despite being the largest party, Congress’s failure to form a government also negatively affected its standing.

“The 2017 election was a golden opportunity to form a stable government with nearly two-thirds majority, but it was squandered, which caused damage,” Sharma said. “After failing to provide a prime minister and stable government for five years, voters sought new alternatives, which contributed to our defeat.”

He observed that repetitive leadership faces in the prime ministerial role increased public disenchantment with traditional parties.

Sharma added that dissatisfaction grew in the party during coalition-focused election preparations, and the party was unable to address dissent manifesting since local elections and culminating in the GenJee rebellion of mid-September.

“Even after the flare-up of dissent in the GenJee rebellion, we did not declare an emergency or open doors for change within the party. We wasted approximately 125 days in fruitless internal debates,” he said.

He explained that domestic political weakness allowed opposition voices on social media to grow stronger, playing a critical role in the GenJee rebellion and turning into electoral consequences.

Sharma concluded that factionalism, personality-centered politics, and over-politicization within the organization harmed Congress’s electoral prospects. He also stated that political power-sharing within state bodies increased public distrust.

He highlighted that excessive politicization, failure of good governance, and corruption control contributed adversely to the election results.

“Narrative that nothing has changed in 35 years undermined party”

Sharma believes that Raswoapa’s (Rastriya Swatantra Party) aggressive narrative claiming that old parties have done nothing in 35 years significantly contributed to Congress’s defeat. “We failed to effectively communicate to the people that Congress has been in government continuously over these years,” he said.

He added that failure to raise public awareness about achievements such as ending the armed conflict, restoring democracy, and drafting the constitution contributed to the loss.

“Under Congress’s leadership, the country gained a new constitution and a new direction. Despite various ethnic, regional, and religious conflicts, Congress demonstrated restraint and maturity to lead the country towards unity,” Sharma stated. “Despite many adversities, the country achieved economic and physical development under Congress leadership and policies.”

He attributed the defeat to the party’s failure to understand the surge of “populism” and the misconception that old parties are entirely bad and that Congress’s return would fix everything, which misled public opinion.

Sharma also cited the party’s captivity to social media algorithms as a factor in the defeat and criticized the narrative that the winning party should not go abroad after elections, which emotionally resonated and influenced family perceptions.

He supported the view that the leadership elected through the special general convention was not responsible for the defeat and expressed opposition to the president’s resignation. Sharma said, “It is unjust to demand a decisive victory within fifty days of the new leadership taking charge and it would be unfair for the president to relinquish command abruptly.”

When Is the Best Time to Apply Oil to Your Hair?

Applying oil to the hair is not just a traditional practice but is also scientifically beneficial. Oil nourishes the hair roots, softens the scalp, and helps promote hair growth by improving blood circulation.

However, to gain all these benefits, it is essential to know the appropriate time to apply oil.

When should you apply hair oil?

The best time to apply oil to your hair is before washing. Applying oil 30 minutes to an hour prior to washing protects hair from the dryness caused by shampoo and water.

Chemicals in shampoo can strip the natural oils from hair, but applying oil before washing creates a protective layer. Additionally, massaging oil boosts blood circulation in the scalp, strengthening the hair roots.

Is it appropriate to apply oil after washing hair?

Many people have the habit of applying oil immediately to wet hair after washing, but this is not ideal. Wet hair is fragile, and applying oil at this time can attract dust and dirt easily.

Moreover, a wet scalp can lead to dryness, dandruff, or fungal infections. If your hair feels very dry after washing, it is better to use a light hair serum, aloe vera gel, or a leave-in conditioner instead of oil, which helps in softening the hair.

Just as the right timing is important, the correct method of application is equally vital. Many people rush through oil application with a quick massage, which doesn’t provide much benefit.

Proper method to apply hair oil

– Warm the oil slightly to facilitate better absorption into the scalp.

– Use your fingertips to gently massage, avoiding nails.

– Massage in circular motions for 5–10 minutes to enhance blood circulation.

– Apply a light amount of oil along the length of your hair as well.

– Avoid using excessive oil; a moderate amount is sufficient.

Which oils are best for hair?

Different hair problems and types require different oils.

Coconut oil – deeply nourishes the hair and eliminates dryness.

Almond oil – rich in Vitamin E, makes hair shiny.

Amla oil – reduces hair fall and prevents premature greying.

Argan oil – very effective for dry and damaged hair.

However, applying oil alone does not guarantee healthy hair. Lifestyle factors are equally important. Consuming foods rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals and drinking adequate water helps keep hair hydrated from within.

How often should you apply oil?

Generally, applying oil 2–3 times a week is sufficient. If your scalp is very dry, you can increase it to 3–4 times per week. But overusing oil can make hair greasy, attract dust, and cause scalp blockages, so maintaining balance is essential.

Detailed Analysis of Congress Election Defeat: Bishwprakash Sharma Presents 27-Point Report

The Nepali Congress has conducted an editorial review of its defeat in the elections held on Falgun 21 by preparing a comprehensive report outlining 27 key reasons behind the loss. Vice Chairman Bishwprakash Sharma identified a lack of party unity, failure to effectively communicate messages of change to citizens, and growing public dissatisfaction as the primary causes of the electoral setback.

Although Chairman Gagan Thapa had tendered his resignation, the Central Working Committee decided to reject it. On 6 Chaitra in Kathmandu, the Central Working Committee convened to extensively discuss why the Nepali Congress did not achieve the anticipated vote share in the Falgun 21 elections. During the meeting, Vice Chairman Sharma presented the election review report, clearly explaining these issues through 27 detailed points.

“While the Rastriya Swatantra Samajwadi Party (RSP) emerged victorious in the Falgun 21 elections, the greater truth is the Nepali Congress’ defeat. Had we managed to reform ourselves in time, conveyed messages of change effectively, this defeat would have been avoided, along with the RSP winning,” he remarked. “The chairman’s decision to resign with moral accountability reflects a high ethical standard that the party honors,” Sharma added. “However, the overall responsibility for this defeat does not rest solely on one leader or the working committee but on all members of the Congress.”

The report emphasizes that the absence of party cohesion, the inability to deliver the change message to the general public, and the rise in public dissatisfaction were the main contributors to the loss.

An excerpt from the report presented by Vice Chairman Sharma to the Central Working Committee states: “We extend gratitude to all voters who participated in the House of Representatives election held on Falgun 21. We congratulate the winning party and all candidates on their success. We also honor election officials, security personnel, civil servants, and the election police. The Nepali Congress accepts these results in accordance with democratic customs. The election has clearly demonstrated the commitment of all parties and the Nepali people to parliamentary democracy. The Nepali Congress will continue to fulfill its responsible role as the major opposition party in the days ahead.”

Proposal to Reject Gagan Thapa’s Resignation Included in Congress Meeting Agenda

During the party’s Central Working Committee meeting on Friday, most central members expressed opposition to President Gagan Thapa’s resignation, according to Vice President Pushpa Bhusal. She stated that, along with Thapa’s resignation, Vice President Bishwprakash Sharma also submitted a proposal during the meeting to reject the resignation. “All central members voiced the opinion that he should not resign by shirking responsibilities to be carried in the future,” she said, “The majority felt it was inappropriate to resign considering the party’s future.”

The party began discussions on Friday regarding the recent election defeat and the issue of President Thapa’s resignation. Following the defeat suffered by Thapa and other party officials in the House of Representatives election, he tendered his resignation. In the 275-member House election, the Congress secured a total of 38 seats under both the direct and proportional representation systems.

Congress spokesperson Chalise stated that the issue of the president’s resignation would be the first topic of discussion, followed by other matters in sequence. “The meeting will continue,” he added, “Everyone has understood the party’s needs. All committee members are responsible for deciding who should lead, the future path, and how to organize the general convention.” President Thapa was absent at the start of the meeting.

As the first party meeting after the election commenced, some leaders aligned with former President Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed dissatisfaction with the recently held special general convention near the election and stated that Thapa’s resignation alone would not solve the problem. “Parliament will now function, and the government will get a 100-day ‘honeymoon’ period; during that time, we must seize the opportunity for party unity,” said Meen Bishwakarma, a leader from the Deuba faction.

To review the election defeat, the party has instructed its subordinate committees and candidates to submit detailed reports analyzing the causes of defeat. With the rise of popularity for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), some within Congress consider ‘internal betrayal’ as a catalyst for the election outcome. Additionally, reports recommending disciplinary action from district levels have also been received. Party spokesperson Chalise indicated that during the election period, some members “crossed the limits of discipline.” However, Bishwakarma from the Deuba faction remarked, “Change sentiments exist within the party, so anything can happen.” Both factions have emphasized the need for self-assessment and improvement to rectify past mistakes and weaknesses.

Kim Jong Un: How Will the Iran War Impact North Korea’s Future?

Following the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, Kim Jong Un is likely experiencing serious concerns. North Korea immediately condemned the conflict, labeling it an “unjustified aggression.” This reaction underscores the strengthening “anti-American alliance” between Iran and North Korea that has been developing since 1979. The two countries have also collaborated on missile development. A former North Korean diplomat, speaking anonymously, identified Iran as one of the primary destinations for North Korean arms exports. However, analysts consider North Korea more secure and powerful than Iran for two main reasons: its nuclear arsenal and its relationship with China.

During the 2003 Iraq War, then-leader Kim Jong Il disappeared for nearly 50 days. South Korean intelligence reports suggest that during this period, he mostly stayed inside a bunker at the Samjiyon complex, about 600 kilometers from Pyongyang. In contrast, Kim Jong Un has recently become less visible publicly — for instance, there was no significant official response even when Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei allegedly faced a fatal attack. These differing reactions and behaviors reflect North Korea’s growing self-confidence in its own power, according to Yang Yong-seok, former director of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service’s North Korea analysis team.

North Korea is indeed a nuclear-armed state. In 2025, former US President Donald Trump formally acknowledged that the country possessed “nuclear power status” and “many nuclear weapons.” According to the 2025 report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, North Korea has approximately 50 nuclear warheads and the capability to produce an additional 40 using fissile material. In July 2024, South Korea warned that North Korea has reached the “final stage” of developing tactical nuclear weapons, which are short-range warheads intended for battlefield use. Last year, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung also stated that North Korea is nearing the stage of intercontinental ballistic missile development.

Seven Arguments Presented by Vishwaprakash Sharma to Reject Gagan Thapa’s Resignation

Congress Vice President Vishwaprakash Sharma has presented seven arguments to reject the resignation of President Gagan Thapa during the party’s Central Working Committee meeting. Sharma argued that seeking conclusive results within the short span of fifty days is unreasonable and that the resignation of the president would be unjust to the organization. He emphasized that the party’s special general convention has revitalized its leadership and that the party must move forward with new plans.

On March 20, in Kathmandu, Vishwaprakash Sharma put forward seven key arguments advocating the rejection of Congress President Gagan Thapa’s resignation. The document submitted at the meeting contains the rationale for not accepting the resignation. Sharma stated that expecting definitive outcomes within the brief span of fifty days is not appropriate.

Sharma’s seven arguments are as follows: In politics, there is a so-called ‘honeymoon period,’ especially during the initial one hundred days of assuming government leadership. This ‘warm-up’ phase may reveal some positive or negative glimpses of leadership performance, but a complete evaluation and comprehensive review cannot be made. From this perspective, given the special general convention had just brought in new leadership, seeking results within fifty days is neither reasonable nor fair to the individual. Additionally, it would not be just to the organization for the president to resign amid adverse circumstances that require overcoming challenges and steering the party towards favorable outcomes.

Nonetheless, while deeply respecting the president’s ethical responsibility and emotions, the meeting, acknowledging its profound duty to manage the situation as well as the highest moral obligation, decided to reject President Gagan Thapa’s resignation.

Among the seven arguments, Sharma highlighted that the Nepali Congress was not victorious as the leading party in the elections. However, it should be acknowledged that the core policy pursued by the Congress has succeeded. Due to the political and economic policies adopted by Congress, both old and new parties have been galvanized. The current constitution, parliamentary system, federalism, social justice, and a liberal economy have all now become the common foundational path forward for Nepal’s future.
