Due to the damage, 80 students are now compelled to attend classes in the community hall. The school principal, Bali Tamang, reported that the flood also damaged seven computers, two laptops, and the school furniture.

May 23, Humla – At Danphe Basic School in Chankheli Rural Municipality-5, students have been forced to continue their education in the local community hall after two school buildings collapsed following severe flooding coupled with a storm on the night of May 18. More than 80 children are currently studying in the community hall as a result of the damage. Principal Bali Tamang confirmed that, in addition to structural losses, the flood inflicted damage to seven computers, two laptops, and various pieces of furniture at the school.

The Karnali Tourism Meet 2026, held in Surkhet, concluded with a firm commitment to promote Karnali in the international market. Kathmandu, May 24 – The Karnali Tourism Meet 2026, aimed at promoting Karnali Province in international markets, has successfully concluded. The event, themed “In the Lap of Nature and Culture,” began on May 21 and wrapped up on Sunday in Surkhet. Organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and Birendranagar Municipality in coordination with the Federation of Hotel Entrepreneurs Associations of Surkhet, the meet attracted around 50 tourism professionals, journalists, and bloggers from various Indian cities.

At the closing ceremony, Padma Bikram Shahi, Central Member of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, highlighted that participants had experienced the historic, religious, and natural attractions of Karnali. He expressed that the event injected new energy into the promotion of Karnali tourism. “Karnali is a sacred land with immense potential for religious and spiritual tourism, health tourism, and nature-based tourism,” he said. “Karnali is also the gateway to Kailash Mansarovar; from Lucknow in India, the cool breeze of Gurans can be experienced within a few hours. The region’s climate and natural beauty offer a unique experience for tourists.”

Rajesh Sinha, President of India’s Travel Trade Welfare Association, described his Karnali visit as unforgettable. He noted that the hospitality of the local people, the culture, and the natural beauty deeply impressed him. “We have received a very warm welcome here,” he said. “Karnali holds great potential to establish itself in the international tourism market, and we want to assure the promotion effort will bring Indian tourists to this region.” Journalist B.S. Parihar from India mentioned that religious and cultural ties between Nepal and India could form a strong foundation for tourism development.

As part of the Karnali Tourism Meet on May 23, Indian tourism professionals and participants were introduced to the religious and historical sites of Dailekh. Following Hindu beliefs, the group visited Navisthan—where the navel of Sati Devi fell while Lord Shiva was carrying her body—and Shir Asthan—the location where her head fell—where the participants observed an eternal flame.

During the experience-sharing program held in the Gurans area, attendees described Karnali’s weather, hilltop landscapes, and local hospitality as key tourism attractions. At the closing event, Senior Officer Santosh Bikram Thapa emphasized that the program was designed to position Karnali not only as a remote area but also as a global center for religious, spiritual, cultural, adventure, and nature-based tourism.

Throughout the conference, traditional Karnali cultural performances such as Hudke dance and Deuda, along with presentations of local culture, were showcased. Additionally, local authentic cuisines and community-based tourism practices particularly attracted Indian tourism entrepreneurs, according to Senior Officer Thapa. He added that the program is expected to play a significant role in expanding Nepal-India tourism cooperation, promoting investment in Karnali, enhancing access to international markets, and publicizing new tourism destinations in Karnali.

In the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, Nepal has engaged in import/export trade with more than 150 countries. India, China, and Argentina are the main trading partners of Nepal. From Argentina, the primary imports include crude soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn, dry beans, and sesame seeds.

May 24, Kathmandu – Data shows that Nepal has conducted trade with over 150 countries during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year (mid-July to mid-April). However, the majority of the trade volume is concentrated with a few countries. India holds the top position, followed by China in second place, and Argentina ranks third. Argentina, a South American country, is geographically distant from Nepal.

During this fiscal year, Nepal imported goods worth NPR 9.527 billion from Argentina, while exports to Argentina remained low at NPR 3.6 million.

According to the statistics, the main imports from Argentina are crude soybean oil and crude sunflower oil. These oils are processed in Nepal with value additions and then exported primarily to India.

Within 10 months, Nepal imported 503.1 million liters of crude soybean oil from Argentina, valued at approximately NPR 8.1 billion. Additionally, 82.9 million liters of crude sunflower oil were imported, with an estimated cost of NPR 1.336 billion.

Moreover, Nepal imported 778,000 kilograms of corn from Argentina, worth about NPR 76.3 million. Dry beans/seeds imports totaled 75,000 kilograms with a cost of NPR 9.724 million. Sesame seed imports amounted to 117,300 kilograms, valued at NPR 263.92 million, according to the data.

In the World Cup, various awards recognize individual achievements. Whether due to political reasons or otherwise, recent events have seen not only feminists but also some men raise their voices regarding ‘women’s appointments’. As leaders of the women’s movement increasingly focus only on themselves and their inner circles, voices opposing feminism have intensified. On Asar 22, 2004 BS (mid-July 1947) in Kathmandu’s Mhaipi area, a women’s gathering established the Nepal Women’s Association, which played a crucial role in organizing women and ending the Rana regime. However, even within our own society, some people today believe feminism is unnecessary, a notion that does not bode well for women’s rights. There is a growing perception that those claiming to have fought for women’s rights have turned the women’s movement into a ladder for their personal gain, prioritizing their own and their affiliates’ interests.

Despite centuries of struggle around feminism and women’s rights, and progress achieved in voting rights and educational equality, challenges such as violence against women and discrimination remain unresolved. Simultaneously, opposition voices to the women’s movement are emerging. Studies worldwide indicate that the first collective author on women’s solidarity was Italian Christine de Pizan, who wrote about women’s social status in 1405. Later, French revolution saw significant participation by women workers. History shows that for the development of society and nation, not only women, but sometimes men have also contributed significantly. Yet in Nepal, certain people tend to regard their contributions in major social movements as solitary efforts rather than collective work.

Historical memoirs and writings reveal that the early women’s movement advanced through collective leadership. A notable example is the women’s meeting held on Asar 22, 2004 BS in Kathmandu’s Mhaipi, which led to the foundation of Nepal Women’s Association and helped organize women. Canadian trainer John Whitehead identifies three leadership theories: the Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, and Transformational Leadership. Nepal’s women’s movement fits under Transformational Leadership, where female leaders consulted and coordinated with one another. During the Panchayat era, women staged sit-ins at the palace to demand their rights, which contributed to the establishment of Padmakanya Vidyashram school for girls.

The first local elections allowing general voting occurred in 2004 BS, but women had to wait until 2010 BS to exercise voting rights, marking a major activism milestone for women’s rights. While the women’s rights movement has impacted society at large, the emergence of self-interest among leaders is seen negatively as it weakens the movement. This was evident in the recent appointment process for the Chief Justice, where women failed to unite. Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and Prime Minister, criticized the current appointment as a step shrinking the judiciary. She described the sidelining of Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla as a ‘kick to 15 million women’. However, her comments received limited support or response in public forums, highlighting that personal interest interwoven with movements, even among women, and partisan leadership cannot sustain momentum on their own.

Political interests influence women’s appointment processes, with reports of longstanding arrangements in Supreme Court appointments for over 20 years. This has increased public dissatisfaction nationwide toward the judiciary, and the future impact remains to be seen. However, there is hope that, as the Nepal Bar Association suggests, people will no longer be required to “hold a lantern” to seek justice. Senior advocate Dr. Shankarkumar Shrestha has emphasized that appointing a Chief Justice alone does not restore judicial independence; rather, restructuring the judiciary is necessary.

May 24, Kathmandu – Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Om Adhikari, serving at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navaraj Adhikari, head of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office at Ramshahpath, were recently honored for their exemplary service. The Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari conducted the ceremony, and Additional Inspector General (AIG) Ishwar Karki, the chief of Ranipokhari, personally bestowed the honors.

The recognition came as a result of their outstanding performance, as communicated by the Ranipokhari office. After the recent Janbaz (JENBI) movement, Om Adhikari continued his dedicated service at the Valley Police Office. During the same period, SSP Navaraj Adhikari played a vital role in restoring the traffic office, which had been disrupted during the Janbaz movement, and significantly boosted the morale of the traffic police force.

They were honored for their excellent traffic management, efforts to enhance the morale of subordinate personnel, and their notable contributions to traffic enforcement and revenue enhancement. Additionally, they were recognized for effectively tracking and returning stolen and lost vehicles to their rightful owners. SSP Adhikari has been commanding the Valley Traffic Police for nearly a month. Notably, during the Janbaz movement, he performed traffic duties on foot and without military attire, demonstrating remarkable dedication.

Additional security forces have been deployed in Lampata, Ward No. 3 of Himalaya Rural Municipality, Bajura, following an assault incident triggered by a border dispute. Locals from Kharpunath Rural Municipality-2 in Humla physically attacked five individuals, including Pema Gara Gurung, a ward member of Himalaya-3. A 10-member police team led by Inspector Laxmiraj Joshi has been sent to Lampata to assess the situation. All injured persons have received treatment and have since been discharged. Following the assault connected to the border dispute in Lampata of Himalaya Rural Municipality-3, Bajura, additional security personnel have been dispatched to the area. The group of locals from Kharpunath Rural Municipality-2 in Humla assaulted five people including ward member Pema Gara Gurung from Himalaya-3. A team led by Dhangadhi Mayor Gopal Hamal, as part of the “Our Far-West We Know” campaign, was reportedly prevented by protesters from reaching the Saipal Basecamp and had to return prematurely.

Approximately a week after the incident, a 10-member police team led by Inspector Laxmiraj Joshi was deployed by the District Police Office of Bajura to investigate the factual situation in Lampata. Police spokesperson Inspector Nareshbahadur Shahi confirmed that a joint force of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force has headed to the area. The team departed on Saturday and is expected to arrive in Lampata on Sunday. The Armed Police Force contingent is led by Assistant Inspector (ASI).

The injured, including the ward member who was assaulted in the attack related to the construction of a police post and the border dispute, were receiving treatment in Kathmandu. Authorities have confirmed that all those injured have now fully recovered and been discharged.
