According to former foreign ministers and diplomats, China currently remains ‘cautious about Nepal’s government policy’.

Against this backdrop, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, currently on a visit to China, is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Monday afternoon; however, detailed information about the talks has yet to be disclosed.

Regarding the overall objectives of Nepal’s new government’s visit to China, former Foreign Minister and CPN leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha states that it remains unclear how the current government will conduct foreign policy and implement it in practice. “Therefore, it is necessary to present itself in a way that gains the confidence of neighboring countries.”

Some perceive that the background of the Jan Ji movement and the resultant government has caused concern in China.

“I hesitate to use the term ‘cautious,’ but there is widespread curiosity about the government’s foreign policy, and to some extent, concern could exist,” Shrestha explains. “The government should clarify that it will advance by prioritizing neighbors while emphasizing an independent foreign policy and the continuation of non-alignment.”

CPN Maoist Relieves Uma Bhujel of All Party Responsibilities

The CPN led by Netra Bikram Chand has relieved Secretariat member Uma Bhujel of all party responsibilities. She has been disciplined on charges of engaging in factionalism and provocative activities against party policy. Uma Bhujel is one of the women involved in freeing prisoners during the armed conflict by breaking out of Gorkha Jail. Kathmandu, 1st Ashar.

Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav)-led CPN (Maoist) has taken disciplinary action against Secretariat member Uma Bhujel (Silu). At the Secretariat meeting held on Monday, the party decided to relieve her of all responsibilities. The letter issued by Biplav states, “Secretariat member Comrade Silu, despite serious discussions with the General Secretary after the Central Committee meeting, has continued to engage in factionalism, deviationist, and escapist activities against the party’s ideas, policies, and decisions. She conducted provocative activities against the party’s working direction, leadership, and people’s revolution. Therefore, it has been decided to relieve her from all responsibilities including the Central Committee of the party.”

UK Prepares to Ban Social Media Use for Children Under 16

June 15, Kathmandu – The United Kingdom has decided to prohibit children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described this as a “momentous occasion for the country” and a successful initiative. During a Monday press conference, Prime Minister Starmer acknowledged resistance from social media and technology companies but emphasized that the government is steadfast in its position. He stated that this measure aims to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time. “I will not compromise when it comes to the safety and well-being of our children,” the Prime Minister affirmed.

This step by the UK is expected to strengthen the global campaign to enforce stricter policies on online child safety. Countries such as Australia, Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia have already implemented age-based restrictions or relevant legislation. Other nations including France, Spain, Denmark, Thailand, and South Korea are also exploring similar measures. Prime Minister Starmer vowed that the UK will implement this law rigorously and will even surpass Australia’s regulatory framework.

According to reports, the Prime Minister has not yet provided detailed information specifying which apps will be banned. However, The Sunday Times has indicated that platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Snapchat, Threads, Twitch, Kick, and Reddit will be included in the restriction. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced plans to block strangers from contacting children via gaming and live-streaming platforms. The ban is slated to take effect early next year.

Despite facing accusations of weak leadership and mounting calls for resignation within his party, Prime Minister Starmer is pushing forward with this social media ban legislation. He expressed confidence in the effectiveness of this measure. Nonetheless, some child rights advocates have expressed skepticism regarding its efficacy. Starmer indicated that signs of success would include a “significant reduction in the number of children using social media” and a “cultural shift whereby children grow up differently.”

The government reached this decision following a public consultation that garnered approximately 116,000 responses from parents, industry stakeholders, and children. This constitutes the second-largest response since the consultation on same-sex marriage in 2012. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy revealed that many young respondents supported restrictions on children’s social media use. In an interview with the BBC, Nandy stated, “I don’t believe a ban on social media is the only solution, but the outcomes seen in Australia demonstrate that it can play an important role.”

This ban may also heighten tensions between the UK and the United States. The US Embassy in London warned against infringing on freedom of expression rights and argued that such regulations should be narrowly targeted. Concerns have been raised about potential increased burdens on consumers and additional responsibilities for companies. John Crocroft, a communications technology professor at the University of Cambridge, commented that although the intention behind the social media ban is commendable, the approach is flawed. He explained that it could hinder access to websites providing essential information and services. Crocroft added, “There is a risk that some children might be pushed toward more dangerous websites, and technical monitoring is extremely challenging. Regulatory bodies must pay close attention to make platform control feasible.”

Former President Dodon Says Moldova Will Take a Long Time to Join the European Union

June 15, Kathmandu. Former President Igor Dodon has stated that Moldova will not be able to join the European Union in the upcoming years and that everyone must accept this reality. In an exclusive interview with the Russian news agency TASS, Dodon, leader of Moldova’s main opposition party, the Party of Socialists, made this claim. Although Brussels has assured that the first phase of talks will begin within days, European officials have acknowledged that Moldova’s EU membership process will be challenging and time-consuming, according to Dodon.
He referenced a recent visit by a Moldovan delegation to Brussels to emphasize that the process will not be straightforward. Dodon accused current President Maia Sandu of making integration with Romania part of a political agenda to strategically pressure the European Union. However, he asserted that the EU itself opposes such potential political moves due to the “certain risks” involved.
Moldova, formerly part of the Soviet Union, was officially recognized as a candidate country for EU membership in 2022. Formal negotiations on membership began during the summer of 2024. Previously, Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi had stated that the country is willing to join the EU as a “partial member” with limited rights, even before the presidential elections in 2028.
Meanwhile, both Moldova and Ukraine are about to enter the first phase of talks for EU membership, but no definitive timeline has been set for their accession. For example, Turkey has been in negotiations with the EU since 2005, yet after 21 years, it has still not achieved membership.

Budget Fails to Inspire Enthusiasm Among Youth: MP Kshitij Thebe

June 15, Kathmandu – Nepali Congress MP Kshitij Thebe expressed that the budget presented in Parliament for the upcoming fiscal year failed to ignite enthusiasm among the youth. He made these remarks during the budget discussion focused on ministerial allocations in the House of Representatives on Monday. “Overall, the size of the budget is large. The choice of words is attractive. The presentation is impressive,” he stated. “There were very high hopes for this government. As a young MP, I was extremely enthusiastic. However, after reading and hearing the budget speech, that enthusiasm did not remain.”

Recalling his long tenure leading youth movements, Thebe shared his views related to the youth ministry. Reflecting on questions posed by young voters during elections, he said, “I was asked, ‘How many youth will your party employ?’” He added that the Rashtriya Swatantra Party faced similar questions and that all promised employment generation. However, he said, in the budget, youths did not find the anticipated job opportunities. Thebe also raised the issue of cardamom production in Taplejung. He noted that 44 percent of Nepal’s total cardamom output comes from Taplejung, and the government should have coordinated with international markets to promote it. He requested the government to set a minimum support price, as this could potentially create employment opportunities for many youth.

Thebe emphasized that the budget reflects a survival-based policy and reminded that the Constitution guarantees education and health as fundamental rights. “There is an economic burden imposed on constitutionally protected fundamental rights,” he remarked. “Extra equality fees in education have planted thorns in the intellect, generating a lack of knowledge. It’s not that we don’t want scholars like our learned Finance Minister,” he added. He pointed out that the budget imposes additional financial burdens on parents. He also raised serious concerns about imposing equality fees in the health sector. “Now even an infant being born has to pay extra health taxes, and there is a loss because taxes have to be paid at every stage — even at the time of death before the funeral, and even on the deathbed,” he explained.

While acknowledging that some sports programs exist, Thebe noted a lack of concrete plans to ensure a quality life, social security, and post-career future for athletes who have created success through their own hard work. Pointing out that the government has also failed to inspire hope among youth in the tourism sector, he proposed developing a High Altitude Sports Corridor encompassing Taplejung’s Kanchenjunga, Topke Gola, Olangchungola, and Gunsa areas. He drew the government’s attention to the extraordinary potential of districts such as Manang, Mustang, Dolpa, and Solukhumbu.

Nine Killed in Russian Airstrikes Across Ukraine

Russian missile and drone attacks across various cities in Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of nine individuals. The assaults caused a fire at the 11th-century historic religious site, the Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, inflicting significant damage. In response, Ukraine launched counter drone strikes targeting Russia’s Tula city, where three people were killed. Many others were injured in these attacks.

According to Ukrainian officials, four civilians lost their lives in the attacks on Kyiv. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, five rescuers died while extinguishing fires caused by Russian assaults. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko condemned the attack on the Dormition Cathedral, calling it a “brutal assault on our citizens and cultural heritage.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has called for urgent action through UNESCO and other international mechanisms to counter this state-sponsored brutality. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that numerous residential buildings and vehicles caught fire due to the Russian attacks. More than 140,000 Kyiv residents are currently without electrical power.

Aerial attack warnings were issued for most parts of Ukraine on Monday. Neighboring Poland heightened security measures and deployed fighter jets in response. Ukraine also carried out counter drone strikes targeting Russian interior regions, including Tula city, where three fatalities occurred. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 123 Ukrainian drones overnight from various areas.

2026 World Cup Match Preview: Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Clash

In Group H of the 2026 World Cup, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay will face off at Miami Stadium. These two teams also met in the 2018 World Cup, where Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia 1-0. The key players to watch this time are Uruguay’s new captain Federico Valverde and Saudi Arabia’s captain Salem Al-Dawsari.

The Asian powerhouse Saudi Arabia will play against the two-time world champions from South America, Uruguay, at Miami Stadium in Florida. The Saudi team, which made headlines by defeating Argentina 2-1 in the 2022 World Cup, will enter the tournament under new coach Georgios Donis. Meanwhile, Uruguay is ready to compete with a new generation following the golden era of Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani.

This will be the second encounter between these teams in World Cup history. In the 2018 Russia World Cup, Uruguay won 1-0 against Saudi Arabia. Historically, Saudi Arabia has struggled against South American teams, though their victory over Argentina in the 2022 Qatar World Cup was a notable exception.

Saudi captain Salem Al-Dawsari, who plays as a key winger for the domestic club Al Hilal, is expected to be the main attacking threat in this match. The 34-year-old Al-Dawsari scored the decisive goal against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. On the other side, Uruguay’s Federico Valverde, the principal midfielder for Real Madrid, will pose a significant challenge for the Saudi team.

Uruguay’s leading striker Darwin Núñez, currently playing for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, will aim to exploit weaknesses in Saudi Arabia’s defense. Ronald Araújo, Barcelona’s primary center-back, will have a crucial role in stopping the Saudi attackers.

Madhesh Province Revises ‘Educate Daughters, Save Daughters’ Program

June 15, Janakpur Dham – The Madhesh Province government has revised the ‘Chief Minister’s Educate Daughters, Save Daughters Program’ and transformed it into the ‘Chief Minister’s Women Self-Employment Program.’ While presenting the budget for the fiscal year 2083/84, Finance Minister Yubaraj Bhattarai announced that the program will be implemented in the future with the slogan, ‘Educated daughters, safe Madhesh! Entrepreneurial women, prosperous Madhesh!’

The first government of Madhesh Province had initially launched the ‘Chief Minister’s Educate Daughters, Save Daughters Program.’ It quickly became one of the most widely recognized and popular initiatives in the province. The program included initiatives such as bicycle distribution, daughter insurance, and civil service preparation classes, which gained national attention. The previous provincial government considered it a flagship program and advanced it with pride. However, following irregularities uncovered in the bicycle procurement process and allegations involving then-Chief Minister Lalbabu Raut, the program’s reputation suffered, and the ‘Chief Minister’s Educate Daughters, Save Daughters Program’ was left stalled.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Skips World Cup Match to Attend Girlfriend Katy Perry’s Musical Performance

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has defended himself after being criticized for leaving his country’s first World Cup football match to attend a musical event featuring his girlfriend, Katy Perry. Writing on the social media platform X, he stated, “Sometimes the duties of being a supportive partner call. But you all know well who should win the World Cup trophy.”

The 54-year-old Trudeau chose to attend the World Cup opening ceremony held in the United States, where Katy Perry was performing, instead of watching Canada’s first World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina last Friday. Following increased criticism on social media, Trudeau issued this explanation on Sunday.

Katy Perry was a major highlight at the Los Angeles opening ceremony of the World Cup, held in the U.S. for the first time since 1994. She performed her popular song “Wonder” before the kickoff of the match between the United States and Paraguay on Friday. Trudeau and Perry’s relationship was first made public in July 2025, and they officially confirmed their relationship in December of the same year.

Trudeau previously ended his 18-year marriage to journalist Sophie Grégoire Trudeau with a divorce in 2023. The couple has three children. Additionally, Trudeau resigned from the leadership of the Liberal Party in January 2025, bringing his nine-year prime ministerial tenure to an end.

Historic Goal Marks Curaçao’s World Cup Debut Against Germany

Facing Germany, the Curaçao team played at the state-of-the-art NRG Stadium, which was equipped with air conditioning throughout the venue—a luxury most players could only dream of. Making their FIFA World Cup debut, the small island nation of Curaçao scored their first-ever goal against the formidable four-time world champions Germany. Despite losing the match by a wide margin of 7–1, Curaçao’s players and supporters celebrated this historic goal exuberantly. Under the guidance of 78-year-old coach Dick Advocaat, the oldest coach in World Cup history, Curaçao overcame numerous financial and administrative challenges to reach this milestone in their World Cup journey. The report is dated 1 Ashar, Kathmandu.

In an old school bus without windows, local music played as passengers rode along, tapping hands on the bus exterior to the rhythm. On board were Curaçao’s players traveling to the USA to participate in their first FIFA World Cup. Despite the humble transportation, the players exhibited a down-to-earth and approachable demeanor. Curaçao, a small Caribbean island nation established only in 2010, has a population of approximately 158,000 and covers an area of 171 square miles. The players, however, showed little concern for these facts.

On Sunday night, Curaçao faced four-time World Cup winners Germany in its opening match. Germany took an early lead, but in the 21st minute, Curaçao’s Livano Comenencia stunned recently retired goalkeeper Manuel Neuer by scoring an equalizer, leveling the score at 1-1. Following the goal, Curaçao’s players sprinted towards the corner of the pitch in celebration. Coach Dick Advocaat raised both hands triumphantly along the touchline, while fans donned in blue jerseys embraced each other and danced joyfully behind the dugout. These scenes clearly showed the importance of this goal for Curaçao. It was the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal. Scoring against Germany in their debut match was no small feat, earning Curaçao the rare achievement of their first participation, first match, and first goal all at once. This brought tremendous joy to players and fans alike.

The game, held in Houston, Texas, saw Germany take control 38 minutes in. Subsequently, Germany scored multiple goals to dominate the match, ultimately securing a 7-1 victory. Despite the heavy defeat, the enthusiasm of Curaçao’s fans during their first-ever World Cup match was unparalleled. They celebrated with elation, momentarily forgetting the lopsided score. Prior to the tournament, Curaçao’s players faced administrative chaos and numerous challenges, having to pay for their own airfares and hotel accommodations. The training pitches were often not in ideal condition. Yet, against Germany, they competed in the ultra-modern, air-conditioned NRG Stadium—an experience that was once just a dream for many players.

“We faced many difficulties before the World Cup. The pitches were not always optimal, travel was problematic, and hotel bookings were frequently canceled,” said Comenencia in an interview. At 78, Advocaat is the oldest coach in World Cup history. He was seen wiping away tears before the match began. After the game, Advocaat remarked, “Even with the 7-1 result, our fans’ happiness and enthusiasm were outstanding. This is no shame; we can still be proud. We have two more matches remaining, and different results are possible. The players will not be discouraged. Playing at this level is a significant achievement for all of us.”

Curaçao, which started playing qualifiers only 12 years ago, holds the distinction of being the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup. They achieved an impressive performance in the qualifiers with 3 wins and 3 draws, accumulating 12 points in 6 matches. After drawing with Jamaica in the final CONCACAF qualifying match, Curaçao secured its World Cup berth. Having succeeded as winners of Group B in the third qualifying stage, Curaçao first participated in FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2014 as the successor to the Netherlands Antilles. In 2022, they were eliminated in the second round after a 2-1 loss to Panama. This time, they seized the opportunity and successfully qualified. In World Cup Group E, Curaçao will face Ecuador in their second group match and Ivory Coast in their third.

Before 2010, the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten were represented by the Netherlands Antilles national team. After that entity’s dissolution, Curaçao inherited the FIFA membership and took over the 151st world ranking. Curaçao’s first official match was on August 18, 2011, against the Dominican Republic, which they lost 1-0. Their first victory came on November 11, 2011, with a 3-0 win over the US Virgin Islands.

Former Ajax and Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert served as head coach from 2015 to 2016 and as interim coach in 2021. Additionally, Gus Hiddink, former manager of PSV, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, led the team from August 2020 to September 2021. Dick Advocaat, who has coached the Netherlands national team three times, currently leads Curaçao. He previously resigned due to caring for his ill daughter but returned to the role after her health improved.

Effective Ways to Repel Flies Using Used Tea Leaves After Brewing Tea

During the summer, the proliferation of flies in kitchens, verandas, roofs, courtyards, and around the house is a common problem. These flies not only spread harmful germs onto food but also contaminate walls and surfaces with dirt. An increase in the number of flies raises the risk of infectious diseases. Flies contaminating food by landing on it poses a significant issue, making fly control essential. Various methods exist to repel and eliminate flies. Commercial chemical pesticides and sprays are often used, but these can have adverse effects on human health. Fortunately, there are protective measures that do not require such chemicals.

One effective method is utilizing used tea leaves after brewing tea. The strong aroma of these tea leaves can help keep flies away. How the tea leaves are prepared is crucial for effectiveness. After making tea, the leftover leaves must be washed thoroughly to remove any traces of sugar or milk, which could otherwise attract insects. Once cleaned, the tea leaves should be sun-dried properly. As the tea leaves dry, their scent becomes unpleasant to flies. Place the dried tea leaves in small bowls or plates near the kitchen, windows, or trash bins. This will help reduce the number of flies and prevent unwanted odors from spreading indoors. Additionally, adding a few drops of lemon juice to the dried tea leaves enhances the mixture’s ability to repel flies. Such a mixture can be placed in areas where flies tend to gather more frequently.

If you often notice flies around your veranda, roof, courtyard, or garden, you can scatter dried tea leaves around the soil near plants. This not only nourishes the soil but also helps in keeping flies at bay to some extent. If flies congregate near your dustbin, place used dried tea leaves in a small plate or bowl close to the bin. This will reduce unpleasant odors emanating from the trash and deter flies. However, it is critical to wash and dry the tea leaves properly before use. Wet or sugared tea leaves may attract flies instead of repelling them.

Nevertheless, simply placing tea leaves is not a foolproof solution for fly control; maintaining regular cleanliness around the house is equally important. Consistently keeping your home clean is the most effective way to minimize fly problems.
