Rastriya Swatantra Party Deputy Leader Ganesh Parajuli’s Expectations from Parliamentarians

April 9, Patan (Lalitpur) – Ganesh Parajuli, Deputy Leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) parliamentary caucus, emphasized that the public is seeking not only new faces but also new thinking, culture, and working style. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a training program organized today by the party’s training department here, he urged the parliamentarians to act responsibly and effectively in line with public expectations. Deputy Leader Parajuli stressed the growing expectation to connect politics with service, accountability, and results, and underscored the need to translate these expectations and trust in the party into tangible outcomes.

“Nepal’s democracy stands at a critical juncture. It is now our responsibility to strengthen it. The new generation’s energy, transparency, good governance, diligence in study, and practice of public accountability are essential in politics. This training is organized with the purpose of laying that foundation,” he said. Parajuli expressed confidence that the experience and knowledge gained from the training would play a crucial role in making the upcoming parliamentary session more effective. He explained that the training would focus on topics such as the role of parliament and parliamentary committees, coordination between the party, parliament, and government, parliamentary ethics and conduct, fact-based debate, accountable political behavior, and effective leadership development.

“Today’s politics cannot be sustained by slogans alone. Politics is defined by capability, readiness, study, and results. The citizens have begun to evaluate political figures based on what they deliver rather than what they say,” Deputy Leader Parajuli remarked. “From the start, the RSP has prioritized good governance, transparency, accountability, and result-oriented politics. Therefore, capable parliamentarians and a strong parliament are essential to implement commitments made to the people.” He urged the participants to regard the training not merely as a formal event but as an opportunity for learning, self-assessment, knowledge exchange, and fostering a future political culture. Following the inauguration, Deputy Chairperson and Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle provided training to parliamentarians in a closed session. Similarly, General Secretary Bhupadev Shah conducted sessions on coordination between the party, government, and parliament, while Deputy Leader Parajuli trained members on their roles in parliamentary committees. General Secretary Kavindra Burlakoti informed that the training program would continue on Sunday as well.

Dialogue Possible in Islamabad as Iran Awaits Response

Talks may begin next week in Islamabad to ease tensions between the United States and Iran, potentially paving the way for formal negotiations. Iran has made it clear that it will not make any agreements regarding its nuclear program and highly enriched uranium. China’s crude oil imports have decreased by 20 percent in April, reflecting the impact of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Kathmandu, 26 Baisakh. There is potential for renewed talks between the U.S. and Iran next week in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, aimed at reducing tensions. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, mediators from both countries are working on a draft understanding that could open the door for formal negotiations lasting about a month. The proposed 14-point draft reportedly covers Iran’s nuclear program, reducing tensions in the Hormuz Strait, and the transfer of highly enriched uranium to a third country. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed hope for a prompt response from Iran; he noted that if talks progress, the ceasefire could be extended.

Al Jazeera reported that Iran has clearly stated it will not agree to any deals concerning its nuclear program or its highly enriched uranium. The first round of talks between Iran and the U.S., mediated by Pakistan, took place in Islamabad on April 11 and 12 but did not succeed despite lasting 21 hours. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Islamabad on April 24 for the second round of talks. However, President Trump canceled the planned visit of his envoys Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner to Pakistan.

Muhannad Saloum, an international politics expert at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, stated that Iran is no longer willing to return to the previous status quo with the U.S. Tehran seeks additional concessions from America before any agreement. According to Saloum, the U.S. first pursued a diplomatic approach, then moved toward military action, and is now trying to return to talks. He said, “The U.S. wants to convert its military success into diplomatic success, but Iran is attempting to prevent that.”

Meanwhile, Iran is exploring a diplomatic path but does not want to revert to the old situation without new benefits. What role does China play? The conflict between the U.S. and Israel against Iran has also affected China’s economic and strategic interests. Assistant Professor Muhannad Saloum of the Doha Institute explained that China has not provided direct military support to Iran in this conflict.

The U.S. cannot sustain this war for long as it risks serious damage to the region’s oil, gas, and maritime resources, with negative repercussions on the global economy. Initially, the U.S. and Israel aimed to weaken Iran’s military and political leadership. It was believed that following major airstrikes, the Iranian government would collapse and a U.S.-friendly administration would be installed in Tehran. President Trump hoped to replicate his success in Venezuela by creating a similar situation in Iran.

Despite U.S. sanctions, Iran is intensifying efforts to sell oil to China. According to Hamid Reza Golamzadeh, director of Tehran-based think tank Diplohouse, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has been engaging in diplomatic talks with foreign ministers of various countries to present Iran’s position.

China’s 20 percent decline in crude oil imports signals that the Iran–U.S. conflict is starting to impact China’s energy supply. In April, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz hindered the movement of oil tankers. According to Chinese customs data, China imported 38.5 million metric tons of crude oil in April, a 20 percent drop compared to last year and the lowest since July 2022.

Gnyawali: Network Control is Driving Society Towards Self-Censorship

Pradeep Gnyawali, a leader of the CPN (UML), has stated that constitutional amendments should not weaken the fundamental pillars of the republic and democracy. Gnyawali noted that the current political power balance is unfavorable to democratic and leftist forces and warned of the need for vigilance during the amendment process. He expressed concern over attempts to weaken independent media and fears that the country is moving towards elected authoritarianism. (April 9, Kathmandu)

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Constitutional Amendment, Defense of Republic and Nationalism’ organized by the Rastriya Janamorcha, Gnyawali said that the capacity of major parties to build the constitution is weakened in the present political environment. He pointed out that with just 79 members combined from the three main parties in the House of Representatives, the power to block adverse constitutional changes is diminished.

He stated, “Attempts are ongoing to weaken independent media and by controlling social networks, society is being pushed towards self-censorship.” Commenting on the government’s recent conduct, Gnyawali raised concerns that the country is progressing towards elected authoritarianism. He also accused the government of trying to limit fundamental rights, trade union rights, and press freedom.

Regarding the debate on the directly elected executive system, Gnyawali argued that such a system would be harmful for a country like Nepal with its geopolitical circumstances. He remarked, “I’ve heard that the Prime Minister has expressed a desire to emulate Hitler’s ‘managerial skills’ to unify society under a single ideology. Holding such views in a society full of pluralism and diversity is objectionable.”

Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla Warns Against Violence Undermining Legal Traditions

Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla emphasized that acts driven by self-interest through violence against legal and statutory traditions reflect signs of authoritarianism. She cautioned that attempts to bring about change by dismantling established structures may hurt the interests of those in power but will ultimately disappoint those who believe in the rule of law. The statement was made on 26 Baishakh in Kathmandu.

Speaking at an event on Saturday commemorating Law Day, she noted that tampering with the law under the guise of justification is a form of arbitrariness that makes it impossible to maintain faith in the rule of law. “Efforts to establish dominance over one’s environment under the pretext of seeking change by breaking down existing structures may challenge those in power, but it will certainly shatter the aspirations of those who expect adherence to law and legal procedures,” she said.

Highlighting that selfish acts that destroy legal and statutory traditions illuminate the reality of authoritarianism, she stressed that it is everyone’s duty to demonstrate courage, capacity, and commitment against such actions. According to her, those who believe in the rule of law must unite to resist such conspiracies.

April 9, Kathmandu – Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Russia is engaged in a just war against Ukraine during his address at the annual Victory Day parade held in Moscow’s Red Square. The Victory Day parade is considered Russia’s largest national celebration, commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

In his speech, Putin also sharply criticized the European Union and NATO. He accused NATO countries of providing weapons and support to Ukraine, thereby labeling Ukraine as the aggressor. Despite Putin’s aggressive rhetoric, this year’s Victory Day in Russia was observed more peacefully compared to previous years, a fact noted by international media. Prior to the ceremony, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

For the first time in nearly two decades, reports stated that no military weapons or heavy equipment were displayed during Moscow’s Victory Day parade. Nevertheless, heavy security measures were in place, and a large number of soldiers marched in Red Square to participate. At the start of his address, Putin honored the sacrifices made by Soviet soldiers during World War II.
