Canada Unveils AI Strategy to Create 250,000 Jobs and Boost GDP by 3%

Canada has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) strategy aiming to create 250,000 jobs by 2031. To support domestic AI companies, the Canadian government plans to establish a new technology fund worth 500 million Canadian dollars. This strategy is expected to increase Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 3%, generating an economic benefit equivalent to 200 billion Canadian dollars. (May 5, Kathmandu)

On Thursday, Canada announced its new AI strategy, which sets a target of creating 250,000 jobs by 2031. According to Reuters, the strategy includes a 500 million Canadian dollar (approximately 365 million US dollars) technology fund to support domestic AI companies. This initiative, named “AI for All,” was announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Amid significant investments by major Canadian firms in developing new tools for faster information processing and in historically low productivity growth sectors, Carney unveiled the strategy from Toronto. The plan forecasts a 3% increase in Canada’s GDP. The commercialization and application of AI across key sectors are expected to boost labor productivity and unlock economic potential valued at roughly 200 billion Canadian dollars.

Currently, approximately 800,000 workers are employed in Canada’s digital sector, contributing over 140 billion Canadian dollars to GDP. Of these, 150,000 jobs are directly related to AI. Compared to US tech companies, Canadian AI firms face a shortage of capital. To address this, Canada plans to launch the 500 million Canadian dollar “Canadian Tech Growth Fund,” which will also provide opportunities for the federal government to make equity investments in Canadian AI companies.

To improve access to AI tools for small and medium-sized enterprises, the government will activate a 500 million Canadian dollar initiative through the Business Development Bank of Canada. Additionally, Canada reiterated plans to introduce new consumer privacy legislation aimed at protecting children’s information and online activities, combating deepfakes, and strengthening control over personal data. The government will invest 50 million Canadian dollars to monitor AI-related risks and conduct transparent evaluations of AI models, although timelines for implementing these regulations remain unspecified.

Experts Criticize FIFA’s Ban on Bringing Water Bottles to Stadiums Due to Heat Risk

FIFA has prohibited the use of reusable water bottles inside stadiums starting seven days before the 2026 World Cup for security reasons. This ban affects 14 out of 16 venues where extreme heat is expected, raising health concerns among temperature experts who have condemned the decision. Fans perceive the move as a profit-driven strategy, while FIFA has promised to provide cooling tents and water stations to help mitigate heat risks.

22 May, Kathmandu – FIFA’s recent policy ahead of the 2026 World Cup has come under criticism for potentially increasing health risks for fans. Citing security concerns, FIFA has implemented a rule that disallows bringing reusable water bottles into stadiums, a decision announced just a week before the tournament begins.

The previous guidelines allowed spectators to bring empty, transparent, and reusable plastic bottles up to 1 litre in size into the stadiums. However, the updated directive now bans bottles, cups, jars, and cans entirely. According to FIFA, the restriction aims to protect players and others from potential hazards caused by thrown objects. “FIFA is committed to the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff,” the organization stated.

Fans will be able to purchase water inside the stadiums, and FIFA assures that water prices will not exceed normal levels. Yet, temperature experts have criticized the ban, stating it could significantly increase heat-related health risks. One expert noted that the policy clearly raises the likelihood of heat-induced medical problems among attendees.

In May, scientists warned that FIFA’s heat management plans might be insufficient, as 14 of the 16 host venues are expected to experience dangerous temperature levels. FIFA has responded by confirming cooperation with host cities and local authorities to implement cooling measures such as misting stations, fans, drinking water stations, and cooling tents. The organization insists that water pricing inside stadiums will remain consistent with other events.

This policy change comes amid ongoing controversies over the “excessive” ticket prices and costly transportation for the tournament. A similar ban on bringing bottles inside stadiums was enforced at the last World Cup in Qatar. Fans from England and other countries have criticized the move as “a strange decision” and interpret it as another method of generating revenue. Many argue it is inappropriate to prevent spectators from bringing water into venues prone to extreme heat and hope that free water fountains will be made available within stadiums.

News Summary

Prepared after editorial review.

  • An ActionAid Nepal study found that 66.2% of workers in the informal sector do not receive their full wages.

A recent study reveals that most workers in Nepal’s informal sector do not receive their full wages. ActionAid Nepal conducted a survey covering 361 workers across 13 districts. The findings showed that a majority of workers lack written contracts, receive incomplete wage payments, and that female workers face higher exploitation compared to their male counterparts.

The report, released on Thursday in Kathmandu, highlights wage theft as a serious and systemic issue. Among the surveyed workers, 66.2% reported not receiving their full entitled wages, while 73.4% stated they only received partial payments.

Furthermore, 93.1% of workers did not have written labor contracts. Despite wage issues, 89.2% did not file formal complaints. The study also found that 24.9% experienced delayed payments and 18% received wages lower than agreed upon.

The study also exposed significant gender disparities in the labor market, finding that female workers earn on average 31.1% less than their male counterparts.

According to the report, contractors and primary employers are the main actors exploiting workers. About 57.3% of workers receive wages through contractors, yet only 6.9% of these have written contracts, the study notes.

Workers who find employment through middlemen have zero incidence of written agreements, the study revealed.

Reacting to the report, Narayannath Luintel, Deputy General Secretary of the Nepal Trade Union Federation (NTUF), stated that wage theft is widespread in the informal labor sector.

Saroj Pokharel, Head of Program, Policy, and Business Development at ActionAid Nepal, noted that difficulties in obtaining evidence and limited access among informal workers make it even harder for them to obtain justice.

The report calls for stronger protections for informal sector workers’ rights, mandatory written labor contracts, and effective grievance mechanisms.

UMAL General Secretary Pokharel Discusses Future Plans to Address Party Challenges

Shankar Pokharel, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), expressed hope for overcoming the challenges faced by the party and regaining public trust. He emphasized that building a stronger party requires open self-assessment, acceptance of weaknesses, unity, and discipline. According to him, these measures can only succeed through institutional and legal processes. Kathmandu, 22 Jestha.

General Secretary Pokharel noted that although the party currently appears distant from the public, he remains optimistic about restoring its strength. He highlighted the critical need for open self-examination, unity, and discipline within the party. He shared these views via Facebook amid ongoing discussions about leadership changes in the UML.

In his Facebook post, he wrote, “The party faces challenges, but they can be overcome. Problems exist, but their solutions are attainable. Election results have shown weakened connections with the public, but these can be strengthened again.” He added, “For this, open self-review, acceptance of weaknesses, unity, and discipline are essential. All these processes can only succeed through institutional and lawful methods.”

Meta Strongly Opposes Australia’s New Media Funding Plan

Meta has strongly opposed the Australian government’s new plan that would compel digital platforms to financially support news media outlets. Under the proposed scheme, social media networks failing to reach agreements would be required to pay 2.25% tax on their total Australian revenues. If enacted, this new law is expected to provide local media with an annual revenue boost estimated between 200 million and 250 million Australian dollars. Kathmandu, 22 Jestha.

The tech giant Meta, parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has expressed strong objections to the Australian government’s latest initiative intended to ensure economic support for news media by digital platforms. Meta criticized the government proposal as poorly designed and fundamentally unfair. On Thursday, Meta claimed the introduced News Bargaining Incentive (NBI) scheme would hinder media outlets from innovating in ways needed to sustain a healthy media ecosystem.

In a report submitted to the government, Meta stated, ‘The NBI works in the opposite direction. It guarantees revenue irrespective of whether media organizations have sustainable business models. This protection from competitive pressures stifles necessary adaptation to changing times. At a moment when transformation is critical, it institutionalizes greater dependency.’ Meta further asserted that the government’s plan is economically incompatible, destined to fail, and violates commitments under the Australia–United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The plan put forward by Australia’s center-left Labor government mandates that if social media and search platforms do not reach payment agreements with Australian media outlets for their news content, they must pay a 2.25% tax on their overall Australian revenue. Platforms that meet designated minimum advertising payment thresholds may qualify for a reduced tax rate of 1.5%. Revenues collected through this tax will be distributed based on the number of journalists employed by the news media. This proposal specifically targets major global players including Meta, Google, and ByteDance, parent company of TikTok.

Following the previous government’s News Bargaining Code, which Meta and others rendered ineffective by removing news content from their platforms, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese introduced this revamped plan in April. The government estimates that if the proposal is approved by parliament, it will generate between AUD 200 million and 250 million (USD 143 million to 178 million) annually for local news media. According to Australia’s media union, Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, more than 19,500 journalists have lost their jobs in Australia since 2008 due to significant declines in advertising revenue.

Ivory Coast Registers Historic Victory Over France

In a friendly match held as preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ivory Coast secured a historic 2-1 victory over France. Guela Doue scored one goal for Ivory Coast, while Amad Diallo netted the decisive goal to seal the win. France’s Ryan Cherki opened the scoring early, but Ivory Coast mounted an impressive comeback in the second half. Kathmandu, 22 Jestha.

Ivory Coast recorded a landmark win against France in this friendly match previewing the FIFA World Cup 2026. After a strong second-half performance, Ivory Coast triumphed with a 2-1 scoreline. The match, held in Nantes, saw Guela Doue shine as the key figure by not only scoring one goal but also creating another crucial chance. Notably, Doue is the brother of Desire Doué, a star player for France and Paris Saint-Germain, adding special significance to his decisive role against his brother’s national team.

France exhibited excellent play in the first half and took the lead through a brilliant goal by Ryan Cherki. However, the momentum shifted in the second half when Doue leveled the score in the 53rd minute, assisted by Nicolas Pépé. Shortly after, Amad Diallo scored following a cross from Doue, delivering Ivory Coast a historic victory.

France’s captain Kylian Mbappé made several attacking attempts in the first half, but the game’s control shifted in the second half. While France dominated early on, with players like Michael Olise and Marcus Thuram creating opportunities, they were unable to convert these into goals. This win against France ahead of the World Cup significantly boosts Ivory Coast’s confidence. Ivory Coast will begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 by facing Ecuador.

May 5, Kathmandu – US President Donald Trump expressed that he would be proud to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader. Speaking to journalists, Trump said, “I don’t want to meet Mojtaba Khamenei, but if I did, I would feel proud.” He added that if an agreement is reached between the US and Iran, he might have the opportunity to meet the Supreme Leader, and if that happens, he would present himself with respect.

He said that such an operation would not take just minutes but weeks, requiring heavy equipment. (With agency inputs)

Explosion at Oman Oil Terminal Halts Loading Operations

May 22, Kathmandu – A recent explosion has occurred at Oman’s main oil terminal. The blast is reported to have been caused by a drone attack near the Single-Buoy Mooring (SBM) berth. The exact timing of the attack has not been confirmed. Shipping data from LSEG indicates that numerous supertankers had been anchored near the port area for an extended period on Friday.

According to Reuters, following the explosion, Oman has temporarily suspended crude oil loading at its key “Mina al Fahal” oil terminal. The report states that the explosion took place between the SBM-1 and SBM-2 berths, and sources have characterized it as a drone attack. However, the Omani government has yet to provide any official comment regarding the incident or any resulting damage. Reuters also noted that, due to the terminal being outside of regular office hours, immediate contact with the facility could not be established.

On Wednesday, Iranian state media reported that Tehran targeted a US military vessel heading toward Iranian waters in the Gulf of Oman, claiming the ship housed a “control and command center.” The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has denied these claims.

Earlier this week, during a meeting with Ravi Lamichhane, the chairman of the ruling Rashtriya Swatantra Party (Raswapa), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed that work on bilateral issues would proceed with clear lists and timelines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released the schedule for Khanal’s three-day visit to India, from Friday to Sunday. During the trip, Khanal is set to hold formal talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. According to a statement from the ministry, discussions will focus on further strengthening trade, investment, connectivity, energy, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Former Ambassador Deepak Kumar Upadhyay emphasized the need for clarity in water resources and energy-related matters, stating, “For water management, a DPR (Detailed Project Report) should be developed with third-party mediation and expertise acceptable to both India and Nepal to facilitate water utilization.” Another ex-ambassador, Neelambar Acharya, stressed that questions raised by India should not be viewed with suspicion.

According to Indian media outlet Cricinfo, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be appointed as the new captain of the T20I team, while 15-year-old batsman Vaibhav Suryawanshi is also in contention to make his debut for the national side.

India is in the process of building a team with a focus on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand. This upcoming T20 series will mark India’s first international T20 series since winning the 2026 World Cup.

There is a possibility that World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav may be left out of the squad. The 35-year-old scored 242 runs in 9 innings during the World Cup, but managed only 270 runs from 13 IPL matches in 2026.

Iyer has shown impressive performances in recent years as both captain and batsman. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and also guided Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals.

Shreyas, who was signed by Punjab in 2025 and appointed captain, took the team to the final in his first season. The most buzz surrounds the potential selection of 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryawanshi, who caused a sensation in IPL 2026 by scoring 776 runs with an explosive strike rate of 237.30. If selected, he will become one of the youngest players to represent India’s men’s national team since Sachin Tendulkar.

Before joining the senior national team, Suryawanshi is scheduled to participate in the tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, representing India A alongside Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

India will play two T20 matches against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20 series against England from July 1 to 11.

Development and Conservation Plan for Nagapokhari Area in Ajirkot

A detailed project report is being prepared for the development of the Buddha Himal Himachuli Great Lakes Circuit Trail, including the Nagapokhari area within Ajirkot Rural Municipality. The Division Forest Office in Gorkha has proposed plans for the conservation and infrastructure development of Nagapokhari under the wetland area and tourism promotion program. Due to the lack of accommodation facilities at this religious and tourist site in Ajirkot, tourists currently have to return the same day. May 4 (Jestha 21), Gorkha.

Nagapokhari, located within Ajirkot Rural Municipality, is a key tourist destination situated at approximately 3,200 meters above sea level. This site is increasingly becoming a major attraction for visitors. According to the municipality, internal tourists form the majority of visitors. Nagapokhari can be reached by about a five-hour trek from Siran Danda in Bhacchek. From here, visitors can enjoy scenic natural views along with close observations of Buddha Himal and Ganesh Himal. The area is home to four varieties of rhododendron flowers: red, white, pink, and blue.

“Most visitors come here for trekking and hiking,” said Dipak Devkota, Chairperson of the Rural Municipality. “A considerable number also come for various religious rituals.” He added that the pond holds unique religious significance and beliefs. Local faith says that the pond was formed from the nectar-like poison rain borne from rare Nagadev (serpent deities) residing secretly in the Kailash Mountain peaks.

“Rare nagas inhabiting the secret caves of Kailash Mountain carry a nectarous poison which affects the surrounding flora, making the region richly stocked with unique medicinal herbs,” he explained. “Local belief holds that the pond was created by rainwater imbued with this nectar from those nagadev.” There are currently no hotels or lodges for accommodation. Visitors wishing to stay must bring their own food and shelter materials.

The Chairperson further noted that the municipality is implementing various programs to promote tourism. Plans are underway to develop this route as the Buddha Himal Himachuli Great Lakes Circuit Trail. “The trail starts from Ruvinal and continues through Dudhpokhari and Dordi, ending at Marsyangdi. Coordination with the Tourism Board is ongoing to complete the detailed project report, and work is moving forward,” he said. The Division Forest Office has also initiated programs for the preservation of this pond, known for its historical and religious importance.

Madan Mohan Shandilya, head of the Division Forest Office, stated they are carrying out plans for pond conservation by laying stone slabs and conducting cleaning activities. Under the wetland area and tourism promotion program, new foot trails and infrastructure development around settlements are also planned.
