News Summary

  • The Gandaki Province cricket team created history by defeating the departmental team APF in the PM Cup.
  • In a reduced 21-over match, Gandaki defeated APF by 43 runs.
  • Captain Bipin Khatri credited the spin bowling for playing a key role in the victory.

March 29, Kathmandu – The Gandaki Province cricket team secured a historic victory in the PM Cup by defeating the departmental team APF Club at the Tallo Mulapani cricket ground.

For the first time in PM Cup history, Gandaki overcame a departmental team, successfully winning by 43 runs. Due to poor ground conditions caused by rain, the match was reduced to 21 overs.

To overcome the APF team, which included national captain Rohit Paudel and other international players, Gandaki’s spinners delivered a brilliant performance, complemented by solid contributions from the batsmen.

Batsmen Gaurav Bik, Deepak Dumre, Arjun Kumal, and captain Bipin Khatri played significant innings. The 150-run total in this T20-like format proved challenging for APF.

From the outset, the spin bowlers made a strong impact, dismantling APF’s top order. Unbeaten Rohit Paudel and Sibrin Shrestha exerted pressure at the top. All-rounder Subash Bhandari also delivered an impressive bowling spell, not giving APF any chance.

Left-arm spinner and captain Bipin Khatri played a key role in defeating the departmental APF team. Unbeaten Paudel was named ‘Man of the Match’.

Captain Bipin Khatri described the victory as extremely significant, saying, “Our players had confidence in handling the challenge. We performed well across all units. Playing in the T20 format helped us stay composed today.”

He added, “We wanted to carry a win before heading to Madhesh Province. This victory boosts our confidence for upcoming matches and we will make even better decisions moving forward.”

Dominance of Spin Bowling Overwhelms APF Batting

In the 21-over match, APF opened with Lokesh Bam and Asif. However, Lokesh was dismissed after 9 balls for 14 runs by unbeaten spinner Paudel.

Asif, who scored a century in the first game, was also sent back for 14 runs by Paudel. Meanwhile, captain Rohit was bowled by Sibrin Shrestha.

Earlier openers Deepak Bohara and Sandip Jora were dismissed cheaply for 6 and 8 runs respectively by Paudel and Sibrin, causing APF’s innings to collapse at 47-5.

Later players Yuvraj Khatri scored 7 runs before Amar Singh Rautela was out without scoring, leaving the team at 61-7. Although Sumit Maharjan briefly steadied the innings, Kamal Singh Airy scored 17 and Sumit 22 before being dismissed.

Gandaki’s Paudel bowled 5 overs conceding 31 runs and took 3 wickets. Sibrin took 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs, Subash Bhandari took 2 wickets, and captain Bipin claimed 1 wicket.

After the match, Paudel expressed his happiness at contributing to the win. He said, “We planned to control the key big-hitting batsmen and executed our bowling well, succeeding in that mission.”

He added, “We had many spinners and players with NPL experience, which boosted our morale to secure the victory.”

Paudel also expressed his ambition to continue performing well and help the team qualify for the upcoming Jai Trophy tournament.

Captain Bipin said, “Knowing that the ball was stopping and turning, we chose to use the spinners from the start. According to the plan, Paudel and Sibrin delivered an excellent performance.”

Gandaki’s Strong Batting Display

Due to rain, play started late with the ground at Tallo Mulapani still drying, and the match was reduced to 21 overs. Winning the toss, Gandaki elected to bat first.

Openers Gaurav Bik and Arjun Kumal provided a solid start. Although Gaurav was dismissed for 37 and Arjun for 25, they laid a good foundation for the innings.

Deepak Dumre contributed 34, captain Bipin Khatri remained unbeaten with 20 runs, and Dinesh Budhamagar scored 19, helping Gandaki compile a total of 150 runs.

Captain Bipin noted that the overcast conditions favored their ability to defend the total. “Being players from Pokhara, we are accustomed to playing in such conditions. We believed we could defend a good total,” he said.

With this victory, Gandaki registered their first win in the tournament, earning 3 points from 4 matches and climbing from the bottom to 8th position. APF also has 3 points from 4 matches, sitting in 7th place.

All remaining PM Cup matches will be held in Madhesh Province. So far, only Tribhuvan Army Club and Madhesh Province remain unbeaten as teams. Army leads the points table with 7 points from 4 matches, including 3 wins.

Police hold second place with 5 points from 4 matches, while Madhesh Province follows in third, also with 5 points but a lower net run rate. Sudurpaschim is fourth with 4 points from 3 matches, while Lumbini and Karnali share fifth and sixth places with 3 points each.

Artwork Created by Women but Recognized Under Men’s Names

Throughout art history, it has been common for only men’s names to be mentioned. However, men were not the sole painters in every instance; women were also renowned artists. Yet, because no one held rightful credit over their artworks, history has failed to acknowledge these women. For example, the painting The Triumph of Bacchus was attributed to others for centuries. This highly realistic oil painting, created in 1629, depicts figures enjoying a drinking session. Only recently was it confirmed that the female artist Michelina Wautier painted it. In her honor, the Royal Academy in London hosted a major exhibition featuring this and other works by her. This article highlights other female painters and their notable artworks as well.

The Triumph of Bacchus: In 1993, art historian Katlijne Van der Stighelen discovered this painting while researching the collection of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. Although it had no signature, its grandeur suggested a significant hidden story. She suspected a woman could have painted it. The museum’s curator, Gustav Glück, initially declared the work could not be by a woman. Later, it was confirmed that Michelina Wautier was the artist. She is also depicted in the painting, on the right side, boldly portrayed semi-nude in a combative pose.

Credit for this artwork was initially given to her brother, and many of her other paintings were mistakenly attributed to male artists. Today, she is considered the greatest artistic rediscovery of this century.

Self-Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria: Artemisia Gentileschi Artemisia Gentileschi created expressive emotional paintings during her youth and was in high demand. However, with the decline of Baroque style popularity in the 1700s, she faded into obscurity. Many of her works were attributed to other artists. It was only in 2017 that this self-portrait was officially authenticated as hers.

The Carousing Couple (1630): Dutch painter Judith Leyster was highly respected during her lifetime but was overshadowed by male contemporaries after her death. Most of her works were credited to her husband Jan Miense Molenaer or to Frans Hals. The truth emerged only in 1892 when a dealer found the initials “JL” and a star symbol (a nod to her name meaning “pole star”) under Frans Hals’s signature.

Baroness Elsa von Freytag and Morton Schamberg: In the 19th and 20th centuries, female artists were often dismissed as amateurs or immature. Many women were relegated to the background as mere muses. Among these was a courageous figure, German painter and poet Baroness Elsa von Freytag.

Margaret Keane: ‘Tomorrow Forever’ (1963) The 2014 film Big Eyes portrayed the story of American artist Margaret Keane. In the 1960s, paintings of children with large eyes were extremely popular, but they were believed to be created by men. According to author Helen Gurley, paintings signed by men were valued higher, while those by women were devalued.

Margaret was naturally shy, but her husband Walter was adept at selling and negotiating. He pressured her into allowing him to claim all credit for the paintings. Margaret only signed her works with the surname “Keane.” After their divorce, the dispute reached court, where the judge asked both to paint inside the courtroom.

Walter claimed to have a shoulder injury and did not produce anything, while Margaret completed a recognizable large-eyed child painting within an hour, proving she was the true artist.

Heightened Precautions at Indian Border Following Bird Flu Threat in Nepalgunj, Banke

In Nepalgunj, Banke, the discovery of a bird flu threat has led to a ban on the import of chicks and white eggs from India. The Animal Quarantine Office is destroying 20 to 25 Indian broilers daily. The government is enforcing strict regulations on domestic transport and conducting awareness programs in open border areas. March 30, Nepalgunj.
Due to the detected risk of bird flu in Nepalgunj and surrounding open border areas of Banke, heightened vigilance measures have been implemented. Dr. Hareram Yadav, head of the Animal Quarantine Office in Banke, reported that chicks illegally brought from India through border points connected to the district are being destroyed on a daily basis. He confirmed that bird flu has not been detected in the area and emphasized that the import of chicks and white eggs has been prohibited. He noted, “People try to bring chicks and eggs across the open border zones, but they abandon them and flee when spotted by police.”
The government has imposed a complete ban on bringing chicks or white eggs from India into Nepal. Dr. Yadav also mentioned that there is strict monitoring and enforcement on internal transport as well as on poultry import and export. According to the Animal Quarantine Office, 20 to 25 Indian broilers are destroyed in the district each day. He added, “Clear directives have come from higher authorities, and we are fully alert. Bird flu risks have been identified particularly in the open border areas adjoining the Terai region.” The office regularly conducts public awareness programs, Dr. Yadav said. US Troop Numbers in West Asia Surpass 50,000, Highest Since 2003

Kathmandu, March 30 — Amid escalating tensions and the potential for conflict with Iran, the United States has increased its military presence in West Asia to over 50,000 troops. According to The New York Times, this surge includes the recent deployment of 2,500 Marines and 2,500 sailors, pushing the total number of US forces in the region beyond 50,000. This figure is approximately 10,000 more than the standard deployment levels.

Typically, around 40,000 US troops are stationed across Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Qatar. Meanwhile, the US Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has arrived at the port of Split, Croatia, for repairs. The vessel was redirected from the Red Sea after a fire broke out in its laundry room on March 12. The 4,500 personnel aboard the ship are not included in the current 50,000 troop count.

Additionally, the Pentagon has secretly deployed 2,000 additional troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to locations within reach of Iran. Military experts note that this deployment represents the largest US troop presence in the region since the Iraq War in 2003. This increased military footprint is reportedly providing President Donald Trump with options to conduct ground operations in strategically significant areas like the Al-Faw Peninsula.

Trump Claims US Has Effected Regime Change in Iran

US President Donald Trump stated that the US could take control of Iran’s oil resources and potentially seize the key fuel hub known as Kharg Island. “To be honest, what I really like is taking oil from Iran, but some fools in America say, ‘Why are you doing that?’ but those people are fools,” he told the Financial Times in an interview. According to Trump, this move could involve taking control of Kharg Island. He said, “We can take control of Kharg Island, or we may not. We have many options.”

“This might mean that we have to stay there for some time.” Kharg Island is a small rocky area located 15 nautical miles (24 kilometers) off Iran’s coast. Although small, it is one of the most critical parts of Iran’s energy infrastructure. The island, a vital center for Iran’s oil exports, is considered a lifeline for Tehran’s economy.

Trump claimed there has been a regime change in Iran, from America’s perspective. Speaking recently aboard Air Force One, he reiterated comments he made last week on Fox News, saying, “You can say there’s really been regime change because their leadership has been killed.” Addressing reporters on the plane, he said, “If you look, we have already changed the regime there because a government was destroyed, toppled, all of them killed. The second leadership is almost finished as well.”

“Now the third group of leaders we’re dealing with are completely different from the previous ones. That’s why I consider it regime change, and frankly, they are much more practical.” “So in my view, regime change has happened. It couldn’t have been done better,” he added. Trump also expressed hope that Iran might be willing to negotiate with the US. “We might make a deal with them, but we might not,” he said.

“It’s hard to say regarding Iran. We talk to them, and then we might have to destroy again,” he added. Meanwhile, reports have emerged that Iran has warned of possible retaliatory attacks on universities and residences of US and Israeli officials. Pakistan’s foreign minister has indicated preparations to hold peace talks, though it remains unclear whether the US or Iran will participate.

Nepal’s captain, Kiran Chemjong, has also emphasized that achieving victory is the primary goal. The match between Nepal and Laos, part of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, is scheduled to kick off at 7 PM local time.

Speaking at the pre-match conference ahead of Tuesday’s final game, Arena stated, “We have arrived in Laos with a balanced squad of young and experienced players. My objective is to test the abilities of the younger players. That is why I have included five new players in the national team. Laos is a strong team, but we are fully prepared for tomorrow’s game. We will take the field with the goal of winning.” Arena has introduced Yubaraj Khadka, Pemba Dorje Lama, Roman Bhujel, Milan Rai, and Yogesh Dhimal to the team for the first time.

Why Is Generation Z Preferring Text Messages Over Phone Calls?

Generation Z experiences phone calls as stressful and intrusive, leading them to prefer text messaging. Growing up in the digital age, their communication style differs significantly. Whether it’s asking friends for an address or ordering food, they find sending a text message more comfortable than making a phone call. While some view this behavior as laziness, experts describe it as a form of telephobia—a kind of anxiety related to phone conversations.

A study conducted in the UK found that approximately 56 percent of Generation Z participants disliked answering phone calls. They reported that the sudden ringing of a phone causes them stress. In some cases, they have even urged their parents not to call them. This preference stems from their greater familiarity with chats, social media direct messages, and memes.

Communication experts explain that text messaging offers users more control and security than phone calls. For instance, texts can be edited multiple times, spell-checked, and allow time for research or reflection before responding to a question. In contrast, phone calls demand immediate reactions without prior thought. These advantages of texting have contributed to Generation Z’s tendency to avoid phone calls.

Additionally, many young people perceive phone calls as indicators of urgent matters or bad news. An unexpected call often feels like a disruption. This trend increasingly affects workplace and social relationships because completely ignoring calls can undermine active listening skills, conversational ability, and empathy—traits essential for immediate, thoughtful responses. To address this issue, countries like the UK have started organizing workshops to help young people overcome their fear of phone calls. After all, communication is not just an exchange of words but a connection between people.
