Glaciers in Alaska Rapidly Melting Due to Rising Temperatures

An increase of 1 degree Celsius in average summer temperatures has extended the melting period of glaciers in Alaska by nearly three weeks, according to a recent study. Published in the scientific journal Nature, the research analyzed over 3,000 glaciers from 2016 to 2024. Rapid warming has caused glaciers to lose up to 28 percent more of their protective snow cover compared to typical years. Kathmandu, May 31.

The direct impact of global temperature rise is becoming increasingly evident on Alaska’s glaciers. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Carnegie Mellon University used satellite data to reveal that for every 1 degree Celsius increase in average summer temperature, glacier melting lasts about three weeks longer. Their study examined on-site and satellite records of over 3,000 glaciers in Alaska between 2016 and 2024.

The team utilized Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology from Europe’s Sentinel-1 radar satellite for data collection. Unlike traditional optical sensors, this radar technology can capture clear images of the earth’s surface through clouds, darkness, or poor weather conditions. Researchers note that SAR provides more reliable and continuous data on glacier snowlines and melting days compared to conventional methods.

During extreme heat events, glaciers lose up to 28 percent more of their protective snow cover compared to average years. When this protective layer diminishes rapidly, the underlying ice becomes directly exposed to sunlight, accelerating the melting process. The research team focused particularly on the devastating heatwave in Alaska from June 23 to July 10, 2019, when temperatures exceeded normal levels by 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Anchorage International Airport recorded its highest temperature ever at 90 degrees Fahrenheit during this period.

This intense heat pushed the glacier snowlines approximately 350 feet higher nearly two months earlier than usual, highlighting glaciers’ sensitivity to seasonal changes. Lead author Dr. Albin Wells explained that coastal and inland glaciers exhibit different melting patterns, with coastal glaciers melting more during summer and accumulating more snow in winter. Scientists emphasize that this advanced radar technology will facilitate more accurate assessments of glacier health and help predict the impacts of climate change worldwide.

Spotify Removes Over 57,000 Fake Podcasts Related to Drug Trafficking and Scams

Spotify has removed more than 57,000 fake podcast episodes linked to websites involved in illegal drug sales and scams. The discovery came following a report by the US Congress that revealed criminals were using such fake podcasts to manipulate search engine rankings. Spotify has acknowledged the need to strengthen its systems to prevent the spread of this AI-generated fraudulent content.

The world’s largest audio streaming platform, Spotify, took down thousands of fake podcast episodes and shows associated with illegal drug trafficking and scam websites over the past year. In total, over 57,000 podcast episodes and more than 3,000 podcast shows were removed. Additionally, approximately 3,500 user accounts involved in these activities were banned.

The issue surfaced after a US Congressional report led by Senator Maggie Hassan exposed the extensive network of fake podcasts operating on Spotify. The report raised serious concerns about Spotify’s vulnerabilities and the risks posed by these fake podcasts. According to the report, these podcasts were created not for genuine listeners but primarily to influence search engine optimization (SEO) rankings.

By including links to Spotify, these illegal websites were easily ranked highly on search engines like Google. According to information provided by Spotify to investigators, 94% of the removed episodes had never been listened to, and 99% had less than 10 plays. However, a small number of podcasts were streamed by thousands of users and included instructions on how to illegally purchase drugs using cryptocurrency.

Why Obstruct Efforts for Party Unity? – Sarita Prasai’s Warning

Sarita Prasai, a leader of the Nepali Congress, has issued a warning to the party leadership against hindering efforts to unify the party. Addressing Vice Chairperson Bishwaprakash Sharma, she asked, “This gathering is not aimed at dividing the party but at fostering unity. Why did you attempt to obstruct such an initiative?” Speaking at an event held in Biratnagar on 31 Jestha, she highlighted the risk to the nation if the Nepali Congress remains weak.

Prasai expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership’s tendency to respond negatively and try to suppress internal party meetings and grievances, instead of viewing them in a constructive light. Referring to Vice Chairperson Sharma at a program organized by another faction of the Congress, she said, “We are comrades who have long worked together in politics, advancing step by step from the district level of the Nepal Students Union to the central leadership. Now, you are leading the party, and at such a time, there should be efforts to further strengthen the party, yet it is disheartening that you are attempting to stop these meetings.”

Expressing concern over the country’s current political situation, parliamentary deadlock, and ongoing attacks on the constitution, she warned, “Whenever the Nepali Congress begins to falter, it leads the country toward crisis. Right now, there is uncertainty about whether the constitution and the established system will persist. At this critical moment, the nation’s oldest party, the Congress, must not remain in a state of confusion.” Regarding the upcoming local and provincial assembly elections, she stressed that alienating grassroots workers would make winning the elections impossible. “If these comrades do not support you, can the Congress win the elections?” she questioned the leadership. “If we fail to win, what will be our position in the National Assembly?”

‘Middle Powers Should Not Compete to Gain the Blessing of Superpowers’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged middle powers not to compete among themselves for the blessing of superpowers. He emphasized that small and medium-sized countries should form partnerships with like-minded nations to create a third alternative. This stance comes as Canada advocates for a new global framework amidst fluctuations in its relationship with the United States under a strategy aimed at reducing dependency on the U.S.
May 14, Kathmandu.

Prime Minister Carney stated that middle powers around the world should not compete to gain favor or proximity with superpowers. Speaking in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, during meetings with leaders ahead of the upcoming G7 summit, Carney expressed this viewpoint on Saturday.

He highlighted that in today’s world of intense competition among superpowers, middle powers have two clear options. According to him, they can either compete among themselves to secure the support of superpowers or unite to develop a powerful “third way.” Small and medium-sized states can multiply their influence by partnering with like-minded allied nations.

According to the Indian news agency PTI, Carney cited the balance of power by presenting the fact that the combined population of Canada and the European Union is more than double that of the United States. He claimed that their combined economic size is nearly equal to that of the U.S., and their collective defense budget is twice that of China. Since U.S. President Donald Trump’s second term began, relations between the U.S. and Canada have cooled. Amid these fluctuations in relations with Washington, Canada has been strategically attempting to reduce its dependency on the United States. Prime Minister Carney’s recent remarks are viewed as part of Canada’s strategy to shift from a U.S.-centric policy toward establishing a new global order.

Uncertainty in Expressway Construction: Where Did It Go Wrong?

After the government approved the detailed project report (DPR) for the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Expressway on September 17, 2019, then Nepali Army spokesperson Vignanadev Pandey stated, “We have set a goal to complete the work within three and a half years. Our aim is to show the results of this project during the tenure of the current Chief of Army Staff.” At a press conference held at the Army Headquarters on September 27, 2019, this confidence was expressed while General Purna Chandra Thapa was the Chief of Army Staff. Not only has Thapa retired, his successor Prabhu Ram Sharma has retired as well, and the current Chief of Army Staff, Ashok Raj Sigdel, is now two years into his three-year term. However, the completion of the expressway construction does not appear imminent. Recently, Arjun Jung Thapa, a member of the National Planning Commission who conducted overall monitoring of the expressway, stated, “Considering the current status from zero to 71 kilometers, an extension of two more years seems necessary.” The originally approved DPR specified the expressway length as 72.529 km. However, it was later revised to 70.977 km on November 11, 2024. Years have passed since Pandey expressed hope of “delivering results”; now, with another three years needed for construction, the timeline approaches a decade.

According to the Office of the Auditor General’s report, the Council of Ministers decided to construct the expressway on May 5, 2017, and assigned the Nepal Army with construction management responsibility on August 13, 2017. Initially, the construction was slated for completion by 2021 and later by January 2025. The Council of Ministers extended the deadline to March 2027 during its April 18, 2023, meeting. The 63rd Auditor General’s Report (2027) states, “The construction period was extended until March 2027 without increasing the project cost, based on the Council of Ministers’ decision.” Currently, the project’s modified cost has been reduced by 2 billion NPR to a total of 21.2 billion NPR. At that time, the Nepal Army also informed that the deadline extension was granted without increasing the budget, approximately 21.4 billion NPR. Then Army spokesperson Assistant Rathi Krishna Prasad Bhandari said, “If technical delays related to land acquisition and contract procedures are promptly resolved, the project can still be completed within the scheduled timeframe (by March 2027).”

According to present Nepal Army spokesperson Assistant Rathi Rajaram Basnet, about 47 percent progress—both physical and financial—has been achieved so far. The DPR for the expressway’s starting point in the capital has been prepared by the Nepal Army and submitted to the ministry. Experts say there is increasing hope to resolve the longstanding controversies surrounding the project. Commission member Thapa remarked that approximately 3 kilometers out of the roughly 6.5 kilometers at the starting point have had disputes settled. “Previously, the road passed through farmland, but now the Nepal Army has prepared a new DPR that minimizes impact on people’s fields, temples, settlements, and ghats. We are currently reviewing it,” he added.

Photo Exhibition by Three Nepali Photographers Opens in Italy

News Summary

  • A photo exhibition featuring three Nepali photographers – Kishor Sharma, Uma Bista, and Sagar Chhetri – has begun in Lonato del Garda, Italy.
  • The exhibition showcases images depicting the lifestyle of the Raute community, the Chhaupadi tradition of Achham, and the identity of the Madhesh region.
  • These photographs, selected by Italian curator Filippo Mazzà, will be displayed until August 30.

May 31, Kathmandu – A photo exhibition titled “Nepal Today: In the Forest, In the Village” is currently underway in Lonato del Garda, Italy. The exhibition, which opened on June 11, will run until August 30. It features works by three Nepali photographers: Kishor Sharma, Uma Bista, and Sagar Chhetri.

The photographs were selected and curated by the Italian curator Filippo Mazzà.

Kishor Sharma’s series “Living in the Mist” documents the Raute community’s nomadic lifestyle over six years. Published as a photo book as well, the series offers a rare glimpse into the Raute’s resistance to assimilation into the modern world. It also reflects the possibilities of an alternative and autonomous way of living.

Uma Bista’s photo series “Songs of the Forest” portrays adolescent girls in Achham district who are forced to live in seclusion during menstruation due to the Chhaupadi tradition. Despite being declared illegal in 2005 and a punishable offense since 2018, the practice persists due to social ostracism and fear of religious sanctions.

Sagar Chhetri’s photo series “Eclipse” highlights the complex relationship between the people of Nepal’s southern Madhesh border region and the state, as well as the frequently contested identity of the region.

In the exhibition’s introduction, curator Filippo Mazzà discusses the significant differences between the current state of Western photography and its role in the Southern Hemisphere.

He also sheds light on the emerging generation of contemporary Nepali photographers, stating, “Nepal has presented itself not only as a country focused on photography, but also as one where young artists explore themes such as gender issues, memory and identity, post-colonial heritage, politics, society, religion, and culture.”

“This generation of contemporary artists is perhaps the first in Nepal to present strong artistic backgrounds, vibrant energy, meaningful content, and fearless expressions through their work, despite the lack of public and private facilities in the country.”

The exhibition catalog is published by the renowned Italian publishing house Silvana Editoriale. This project has received support from the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Strategia Fotografia 2025 program.
