Indian Parliament Set to Pass Women’s Reservation Bill, Modi Calls It a Historic Decision

March 30, Kathmandu — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the Indian Parliament is on the verge of making history with the Women’s Reservation Bill. Speaking at the ‘Nari Shakti Bandhan Sammelan’ held at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi on Monday, he said the long wait for women’s representation from state assemblies to the national parliament is coming to an end.

Prime Minister Modi described April 16, 17, and 18 as significant days marking the conclusion of this anticipation. Recalling the first step taken in 2023 with the ‘Nari Shakti Bandhan Act’ introduced in the new parliament building, he informed that a special session will be held during the budget session starting on April 16 to implement the bill promptly and ensure women’s participation in democracy.

He asserted that this decision is one of the most important of the 21st century, expressing confidence that the path for women to enter Parliament will become much smoother. Modi also highlighted that recent government initiatives have economically empowered women, and their current roles must no longer be overlooked.

Home Minister Removes Asset Disclosure Post Following Backlash

March 13, Kathmandu – Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has deleted his comment regarding his asset declaration from social media after facing widespread criticism. In response to claims that ministers hold assets far beyond imagination, Gurung had stated that assets acquired prior to joining the government were not ‘sinful.’ However, after the remarks sparked increased criticism, he removed the related post from social media.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) and all cabinet ministers’ asset disclosures were made public. The disclosure particularly highlighted gold, silver, and various ornaments, which drew sharp criticism on social media. Following the surge in criticism, Gurung issued a response via his official Instagram account.

Gurung said that being born poor is not a fault, but dying poor is. “It’s not your fault to be born poor, but it is your fault to die poor,” he wrote in an Instagram story. “If the assets acquired before joining the government are free from corruption, then it is not a sin, but earning through corruption while in government is a sin.” He also tagged the phrase “#chetanaBhaya” (meaning ‘awareness’) to emphasize his message.

National Volleyball in Nepal: A Blend of Enthusiasm and Challenges

Nepal had a limited presence in international volleyball competitions in the year 2082 BS (2025-2026 AD). The Nepal Police Club secured third place in the CAVA Women’s Club Volleyball, while Help Nepal won the bronze medal in the CAVA Men’s Club Volleyball. Kathmandu, 30th Chaitra.

Volleyball is Nepal’s national sport. While many know this fact, some are unaware. Despite nearly a decade since its declaration as the national sport, volleyball has yet to make significant progress to proudly uphold its identity as Nepal’s national sport. Therefore, the year 2082 BS did not bring any significant or ‘wow’ moments for volleyball. However, the sport remained active on the courts. Although Nepal’s international participation was limited and primarily confined to competitions, domestic tournaments continued consistently.

The Nepal Volleyball Association organized the 9th NVA Volleyball Championship, the Franchise Women’s Volleyball League (WVL), the renowned Tiger Cup volleyball tournament held in Pokhara, and other national-level competitions. The PM Cup NVA League, initially scheduled for Chaitra 2082 BS featuring the top 8 men’s and 6 women’s teams selected from the 9th NVA Championship, was postponed to Baishakh 2083 BS due to technical reasons.

Nepal’s participation in international competitions was minimal in 2082 BS. Its international engagement was mainly restricted to events organized by the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA). In Ashoj, Nepal’s men’s team participated in the CAVA Men’s Volleyball Cup held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This tournament ran from October 22 to 28, in which Nepal finished fifth out of six teams. The team, including several new players, demonstrated a lack of experience in international play.

Similarly, in Magh, Nepal Police Club took part in the CAVA Women’s Club Volleyball tournament held in the Maldives. As the defending champion, Nepal Police Club was unable to reach the finals this time. After losing in the semifinals, they won the third-place match against a Sri Lankan club, securing the bronze medal.

In Shrawan, Help Nepal also earned the third place, winning the bronze medal in the CAVA Men’s Club Volleyball held in the Maldives. In this competition involving six clubs, Help Nepal won four matches and lost one but missed the finals due to the set ratio. Jitendra Bahadur Chand, President of Nepal Volleyball Association, noted that this bronze medal was the second international medal won by any Nepalese volleyball team on foreign soil. Previously, in 2017, Nepal’s men’s national team earned a bronze medal at the CAVA Central Zone tournament held in the Maldives.

Higher Transactions of Small Land Plots of 2.5 to 10 Aana in Provinces Outside Madhesh

News Summary

Prepared after review.

  • According to Nepal Rastra Bank, provinces outside Madhesh show higher transactions of small land plots ranging from 2.5 to 10 aana.
  • In Madhesh Province, transactions mainly involve larger plots exceeding 20 aana, and Madhesh leads in total traded land area.
  • Housing and land loans have increased by 72.41% from fiscal year 2077/78 to 2081/82; the central bank is preparing to publish a housing price index.

Chaitra 30, Kathmandu – Data indicates that small fragmented land plots are more actively traded in provinces other than Madhesh. In contrast, Madhesh Province, with its agricultural suitability, shows higher transactions of large land plots.

According to the latest real estate status report by Nepal Rastra Bank, small plots of 2.5 to 10 aana are most frequently traded in all provinces except Madhesh. Meanwhile, Madhesh Province records more transactions of large plots exceeding 20 aana. Based on total traded land area, Madhesh Province holds the largest share, followed by Koshi and Lumbini provinces.

By the value of total transactions, Bagmati Province ranks highest. In metropolitan and sub-metropolitan areas, plots sized between 5 and 10 aana are the most commonly traded.

The central bank has been publishing quarterly real estate transaction data based on information collected from the Land Management and Records Department and the Inland Revenue Department. In previous years, the bank had also attempted to publish quarterly data on housing and land transactions and track prices, and it is now preparing to reinitiate this effort.

The central bank analyzes real estate trends based on transaction data, including the number of transactions, prices, traded land area, revenue collection, and loans disbursed to the real estate sector by commercial banks.

The study includes analysis at national, provincial, metropolitan, and sub-metropolitan levels and categorizes traded land area by various scales, presenting transaction counts and values accordingly.

Quarterly data shows a seasonal pattern in housing and land transactions, with lower activity in the first quarter of the fiscal year and peak activity during the third and fourth quarters. The highest number of transactions occur in Madhesh Province, followed by Lumbini and Koshi provinces, while Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces experience the lowest activity.

The study further reveals that housing and land loan amounts have risen by 72.41%, and residential loans by 61.55%, from fiscal years 2077/78 to 2081/82. Government revenue from housing and land reached NPR 2.37 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2078/79, decreased to NPR 820 million in the first quarter of 2079/80, but has recently recovered to approximately NPR 1.5 billion in 2081/82.

Based on these data, the central bank is currently working on the second phase of developing and publishing the housing price index.

Theatre Troupe Performs in Western Nepal Highlighting Women’s Entrepreneurship

Dressed in a combination of orange and brown outfits with caps, eight performers are enthusiastically engaged in music. They are seen in village settings, on the streets, and at resting spots. They play instruments and sing, dance as well. There is a notable audience watching and listening to them. This scene is from the street play “Batthai Bato” presented by Kathaghera. Kathaghera is a theatre located in Kathmandu. The troupe from this theatre has been touring western Nepal since March 24. Clips from their performances are now widely shared on social media.

According to Aakansha Karki, director of Kathaghera and leader of the troupe, the play centers on women’s entrepreneurship. The storyline conveys that when women gain skills, it leads to the welfare of all. There is nothing women cannot do; they have lagged behind only because of unequal opportunities. Karki shared that the play portrays stories of characters who work inside and outside the home or who want to do something of their own but have not received support from society or family. Currently, the troupe is preparing for their final performance at Salli Bazaar in Salyan.

Karki emphasized that the play also deals with themes of gender equality and access to opportunity. So far, the Kathaghera troupe has performed in 11 locations across Sudurpashchim and Karnali Provinces—6 in Sudurpashchim and 5 in Karnali. After today’s performance, the troupe plans to return to Kathmandu. The play has received wide praise on social media, though some have offered critical remarks, particularly regarding the use of the phrase “Napuj, Nadhog”, which some critics claim attacks religion and tradition. On this matter, Karki explained that these words have been misinterpreted through distortion, clarifying that they are purely symbolic.

Director Karki also announced that the street play will be made available on YouTube on April 15.

Ravi Lamichhane: What Will the New House of Representatives Rules Say About Suspension of MPs?

As the new rules for the House of Representatives are being prepared, some have called for a decision on whether to suspend Ravi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, due to the ongoing cases against him. Lamichhane, who was suspended in the previous House over allegations related to cooperative sector money laundering, had addressed the first meeting of the newly elected House on behalf of his party.

While the money laundering case is still pending in court, Lamichhane was re-elected to the House from Chitwan-2. Some have raised questions about how he was able to enter parliament given that he was suspended in the previous term and current legal provisions remain unchanged. Section 27 of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2064 (2007), stipulates automatic suspension for officials, employees, or public servants against whom money laundering cases are filed.

Dinesh Prasai, chairman of the Gatisheel Democratic Party, which has no parliamentary representation, also highlighted this issue, urging a decision on Lamichhane’s suspension. However, certain legal experts argue that since the new parliament has the authority to establish its own rules, an accused person isn’t automatically suspended while the case is ongoing. Among those advocating on Lamichhane’s behalf is senior advocate and former Attorney General Sushil Pant. “The automatic suspension provision applies when the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority files corruption or money laundering cases. However, this automatic application is not in effect within the parliament,” Pant said ahead of the election.

Street Festival to Mark Nepali New Year in Thamel

In celebration of Nepali New Year 2083, preparations are underway to hold the ‘Thamel Street Festival’ in Kathmandu’s Thamel area. The Thamel Tourism Development Council plans to set up 32 stalls along Tridevi Marg to showcase food and various products. Cultural programs will commence at 6:00 PM, with the festival concluding at 12:30 AM, according to the council.

The festival is set to take place in Thamel, the federal capital Kathmandu’s prime tourist destination. Sahadev Dhamala (Bimal), Vice Chairman of the council, shared that the event aims to promote the New Year internationally. “On the eve of the New Year, various stalls will be set up on Thamel’s streets showcasing food and goods, alongside authentic cultural performances,” he stated.

According to him, the 32 stalls will be arranged along Tridevi Marg to promote food and merchandise sales. Cultural programs starting at 6:00 PM will welcome the New Year, with the festival wrapping up at 12:30 AM. Noting that 80 percent of foreign tourists visiting Nepal frequent Thamel, the council highlighted that the event expects significant participation from both local and international tourists.

Narayan Dham Ashram’s Economic Management through Medicinal Plant Cultivation

Narayan Dham Ashram, located in Ramghat, Bharatpur Metropolitan City ward no. 4, has been leasing land for 18 years at an annual rent of NPR 72,000 to cultivate the medicinal plant Kurilo. According to the ashram manager, Taranath Paudel, Kurilo cultivation is conducted entirely through organic methods, providing financial support for the ashram’s operations. Paudel noted that the main season for Kurilo is during the months of Chaitra, Baisakh, and Jestha, and that the plant has medicinal properties which help enhance the body’s immune system.

The ashram’s animal and agricultural farm produces Kurilo, mango, elephant foot yam (bhui-kathar), and other crops, all grown organically. Around 15 katthas of land are dedicated to Kurilo cultivation. Paudel explained that the income generated from this cultivation financially supports the ashram’s activities. Since the products are organically grown, there is no difficulty finding buyers, with sales conveniently made through the farm and the ashram itself.

Kurilo—a medicinal crop—strengthens the body’s disease resistance. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used; instead, fertilizers made from cow dung and cow urine are applied. Approximately NPR 800,000 has been invested in Kurilo farming. Revenues after expenses help sustain the ashram’s operations, Paudel shared. The price for Kurilo varies by season, ranging from NPR 500 to NPR 1,200 per kilogram, with daily sales averaging about 20 kilograms.

According to manager Paudel, Kurilo’s peak season is Chaitra, Baisakh, and Jestha, and this crop has been continuously cultivated at the ashram for the past four years. With proper care, the crop can yield for 10 to 12 years. Because organic farming can increase challenges from pests, diseases, and weeds, cultivation is regularly managed with technical assistance from the Chitwan Agriculture Development Office. Production begins roughly six months after planting. Kurilo seeds are readily available in the market, and the months of Magh, Falgun, and Chaitra are considered ideal for planting. Currently, the ashram provides free meals for about 20 residents and visitors. Additionally, cows raised at the ashram contribute to the production of organic fertilizers used in farming.

Former Prime Minister Oli Undergoes Gallbladder Surgery Today

March 14, Kathmandu – Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to undergo gallbladder surgery today. The medical team responsible for his treatment had previously set this date for the procedure. Following the preoperative preparations, Oli has been moved to the operating theater. The surgical team, led by Dr. Paleswāñ Joshi Lākhe, will perform the operation to remove the gallstones found in his gallbladder. The stone measures 22 mm in size.

Previously, the day after the formation of the new government, Oli was arrested on charges related to suppressing the Genji agitation. He has been admitted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital since the day of his arrest. Following his detention, his wife, Radhika Shakya, filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court, alleging unlawful custody. On the evening of March 9, the Supreme Court ordered that the ongoing investigation against former Prime Minister Oli and then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak be completed by Thursday, March 12. The court mandated that if the investigation was not concluded by then, they are to be released on conditions. In line with this, police transferred custody of Oli from the hospital to his wife, Radhika Shakya. Although released, he remains hospitalized for the surgery.

Tensions Escalate in the Gulf Region, Future of Negotiations Remains Uncertain

March 20, Paris – The ongoing tension in the Middle East appears to have entered a decisive phase. Following the failure of talks between the US and Iran, military pressure, rising oil prices, and increasing regional conflicts have intensified, heightening the risk of war. US President Donald Trump stated that whether or not there is a deal with Iran makes no difference to him. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after returning from Florida, he said, “Even if there is no agreement with Iran, the US will remain firm in its strategy.”

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts appear weakened as talks held over the weekend in Pakistan ended without conclusion. Amid rising tension, the US military announced that it will implement a blockade on Iranian Gulf ports starting Monday. According to US Central Command, ships moving to and from Iranian ports near the Strait of Hormuz will be subject to surveillance and control. Despite the escalation, it was clarified that the free movement of vessels from other countries will not be hindered. This strategic chokepoint, responsible for nearly one-fifth of global oil supply, is expected to see increased instability in world markets as a result of this move.

Iran rejected this step, responding sternly. The Revolutionary Guards claimed full control over the Hormuz area and warned of a strong response to any provocative action. The head of the Iranian Navy labeled the US move as “ridiculous” and stated that their forces are monitoring all activities in the region. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that the country will not succumb to pressure, saying, “If war is imposed on us, we will fight, and if dialogue resumes, we will proceed accordingly.” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted that the talks were ‘just an inch away’ from an agreement but accused the US of not changing its stance at the last moment.

Meanwhile, the direct impact of the tensions is evident in energy markets. The price of US crude oil exceeded $100 per barrel annually, and Brent crude prices have surged sharply on international markets. Analysts attributed the price rise to the risk posed by disruptions in the Gulf region, which could cause supply instability.

At the regional level, there are no signs of the conflict abating. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam indicated that efforts to end the Israel-Hezbollah conflict are ongoing. He noted work is being done to facilitate the return of Israeli forces, free prisoners, and reconstruct destroyed infrastructure. However, Israel signaled the continuation of its military actions. During a visit to southern Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that the threat from Hezbollah is under control but admitted that “war is still ongoing within the security zone.”

The UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, reported that Israeli tanks twice collided with their vehicles, blocking several roads in southern Lebanon, raising international concerns. Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed that at least five people have died in recent attacks, bringing the total death toll to 2,055. Israel reiterated its refusal to extend the currently enforced ceasefire to Lebanon and emphasized continuing operations against Hezbollah.
